i partitioned my hard drive during my installion of ubuntu 6.10 in didnt work and i lost 120 gb on my external harddrive and i would like it back is there a free was to do this i tried to reformat but it didnt work so.......

You can use the Gparted partition manager to repartition your drive. It can pretty much make whatever format(s) you choose.

Just curious, but why didn't your external drive work with Ubuntu, I have done this many times on an external hdd, as long as your bios picks up your hdd everything should be fine? If it doesn't (you'll get an error from the grub) then you'll possibly have to flash update your bios or just slap the hard drive into the secondary hdd slot inside your computer (if it has one).

Formatting and Partitioning are 2 separate steps. Did you do both?

partition magic can do this for you. google it and you should be good.

If you are running windows xp or 2000, just going to administrative tools-->Disk manager can do the job for you.
