I just took it apart and cleaned the ball thing. It happened to work just now and I probably need a new one. What kind should I get and is it easy to install?

go optical!!! wired, wireless, scrolly or whatever you like, but the OPTICAL will never require getting inside it to clean the ball!!

It seems that the life of ur mouse is over. Yes, you can easily install the mouse on your computer. if ur using Windows 2000 then, OS will automatically detect the new hardward in ur computer and u do not need to do any thing. Go and get PS2 mouse.

those old mouses, are a headache, just go get a new one.
get a wireless with infrared sensor it going easy to install, just plug in and folow the instructions, it going to cost you less tha 30 dollars.
