Desktops - September 2007

Hey all,

I'm building a new pc and i have the cpu... but it isn't the newest cpu on the market... so i'm wondering how to determine for myself what graphics card will and won't be bottlenecked my my new system.

I'd prefer not to disclose what cpu etc. my new system has... i just want to know how to figure out bottlenecking for myself instead of always needing to ask.

just wondered what is making computer so slow to start it up it takes about 5-10 mins .Is there anything i can do to get things started quicker? Once it is running the internet works fine,Cheers Lynne:)

I bought a used Alienware desktop pc almost a year ago. i didnt really need a desktop but it was so cheap that i bought it. Anyways when i go into the System Properties it says Intel Pentium D HT processor and it shows the speed of the processor as 3.79 but says it twice. Does that mean that my computer has two processors? I have a copy of the original order form and it said it has two processors but i think i only see one processor inside the case.

When i press my pc "ON" botton. the power seems to work just for 1sec then gone.
normally the red pilot light behind my power supply will turn green. this time it will not light for a short moment then trun red again just when it cuts power to my pc.
any body can help??

It seems to take ages. It was supposed to come out early in 2007 but its not out yet.

And how long will it take the imacs to be preinstalled with leopard when it comes out?

Okay so I play World of Warcraft and used to have a faster comp but something made that comp crash and I am now stuck with my computer I bought in 2004. It is an Emachine and has 64mb Ram. Well I was told the game takes atleast 512 mb Ram to run it properly. I can load it up and play on this computer but it is soooo slow. It takes me about 10 minutes to move my charactor 5 feet. So what do you recommend? I was thinking of getting a whole new computer but then thought it would be cheaper to buy whatever I need to make the game and the comp run faster. Please Help. Thank you

So today at 6AM, I turned on my comp. to review a report for school. W/n 15 minutes of reading it, my comp suddenly shuts down. I let it go as a "overheating power supply" Once I get back from school 8 hours later, I find that my comp. still isn't turning on. I've tried, restarting it, unplugging the main cord, but nothing has worked so far. I'm reasoning this as a dead power supply, but I may be wrong. Do you have any idea as to what could possibly be wrong w/ my computer.

Oh and I've had this dekstop for 4 years now w/ the same power supply. I'm not sure if I should get a new comp, or just get a new power supply.

My CD drive is broken. It won't open and it is making this clicking sound and it makes litte movements like it is tryiong to open but can't. How involved is installing a new drive? Thanks.

when my computer starts it runs normally but right before the log in box appears the screen turns blue it says i need to uninstall something but every time i restart it says the same thing i restarted my computer in safe mode and every other mode so can some1 tell me how to reset it without the recovery disk please

My current computer specs.
Intel Pentium 4 524 (HT) @ 3067 MHz
My Memory is Xerox 256 MB PC2100 DDR
My motherboard is Intel D101GGC
And I have a 30 something gig hd, dun no what speed it is.

What I want to do is buy a new hard drive, probably a WD 7200 rpm SATA 3.0gb (will this work with my motherboard?)

Than i plan to get 1 gig memory DDR 400 added to my 256 which is PC 2100. Is it better if I get 512 x2 DDR 400 (throwing out the 256; or get 1 gig pc3200 added to a slower speed 256 pc2100.

Which is better for my memory choice? 512 x2 pc3200 or 1g pc3200 + 256 pc 2100

ALSO is this a good upgrade or should i just get another PC??

I'm wanting to buy two 512mb sticks of DDR 400 SDRAM (PC3200) and I just want to know what brands to avoid and what brands to consider, preferably under $50 per stick but not el cheapos.

For instance, I've heard mixed things (but mostly good) about Kingston and that cheap Corsair RAM dies after a few months.

My computer is playing up, only 3 months old. I backed up my files and transferred them to my old computer. There are three of us on a homegroup, and the guys are alway changing things.

I want to get it blank, and reload everything again.
I don't want to do it in Safe Mode, because that still leaves some software on it. I want to upload all my disks again.

What buttons do I press. F8 takes me to Safe Mode. So that is no good.

It is not a laptop. The tower has ASUS / AMD 64 Athlon X 2 on it..

I need an answer from a computer tech. Please.

How do I do this? Urgent. Very urgent. Thanks in advance.

My computer has had some upgrades recently; its a Dell GX260. I put in a gig of ram, a new graphics card and a new hard drive. Everything was fine for about 2 months, then all of a sudden last week the fan started running nonstop. From the moment I turn it on to shutting it off the fan is running full speed, and its very noisy. I dont think I've actually heard it run before. The interior of the pc doesnt look dirty, although there was an accumulation of debris on the outside which I wiped down. Any ideas what could have caused it and how to stop it or fix it?

My computer just crashed and I sent a error report to microsoft and they said

"that my (BIOS) system version on my computer does not match the specifications for the central processing unit (CPU) that was installed on my computer.

What does this mean???

i have an evga nVidia 7950 gx2 video card
do i need to get another evga nVidia 7950 gx2 videocard for quad gpus or can i use another nVidia 7950 gx2 videocard like XFX 7950 gx2 or inno3D 7950 gx2 ?
