The tech people at my school are selling a Gateway Profile III XL for 25 bucks and i already have the RAM and my computer at home has maxed out 256MB RAM with a celeron processor and this Gateway comes with a pentium III and 256MB RAM with two slots to upgrade to a Max of 512MB RAM. Would it be worth trying for 25 bucks or will i even notice a difference if it does work???

Yes, PC100 will run in a PC that suggests PC133, it just means the RAM will run at 100MHz instead of 133MHz. Not enough of a difference to notice though. Enjoy!

Yes, If the BIOS supports it by detecting it properly and adjusting the memory bus clock and CAS latency correctly.

This is more of a question concerning your specific motherboard memory configuration and front side bus clocking support. There is no golden rule about systems supporting interchangably between PC100 and PC133.

I would not put in slower memory, particularly if there is a compatibility concern.

No. It will work the other way around. Best rule:Older RAM can always slow down, but not speed up. Since there is a difference of opinion on exactly what you asked, try it. Can't hurt anything. Test with the new RAM only, then add the old.

Yes, you can use a pc100 stick in a pc133 slot. (sdram, I assume?)
It'll just run, naturally, at the lower speed.
