Well I allready installed the RAM into my computer. I added a gig awhile ago, but today just opened up my case and looked at the other RAM stick that came pre-installed in my eMachines, and it says it's 512 MB on the stick. Great.... but on my computer (before I added the gig) it said I had 382 MB of RAM. Also, now after I installed the gig it says that I have 1.4 GB of RAM, and if the one installed has 512 MB, wouldn't it be 1.5? What made it 328 MB?

I have A Sony VAIO PCV RX540 I got from a friend for free! It has a 1.2 Ghz Intel Celeron processor with 512 mb ram, 64 mb DVI TV tuner card, Really slow DVD burner, and a CD RW drive. There is a 20 gb hard drive with Windows XP home SP2 on it. It was made in 2001. Is this a good computer where all I have to do is upgrade the DVD burner , Hard Drive and reinstall the operating system? Or should I ditch this one and get a new one. All I want to use this computer for is basic Internet browsing, word processing and light gaming (older less good video games). Please help!

heres my setup: pentium D 925 3ghz dual core, 2gb ddr2 pc5400 ram, 200gb hdd (about 80gb free), and a nvidia 8400 256mb video adapter.

games run ok, but i want more. im saving for an 8800, but for now, i want to get this system as fast as possible with what i have. i can overclock the gpu by 100mhz (dont want to heat it up too much, its already pretty warm in there) so its got a 600mhz core with a 500mhz memory clock.

how else can i speed up my system? i only want it faster for games, everything else works fast enough for me.

This started suddenly one day. My PC just turned off (Poof !!) just like that. I restarted it, it went on for some 15 minutes, then "Poof!" again. Next time I started, it stayed 5 minutes, then 2 minutes. Then it began shutting down as soon as Windows logged on.
Then I left it shut down for 7-8 hours; then when I started again, it went on for 2-3 hours. And from then on again behaved as I said.
I changed the power supply, I changed the RAM, I changed the power cord, I changed my UPS. I tried it in my sister's electricity socket, but same result.
But as I took the PC to a PC mechanic, it worked fine without shutting down for hours and hours.
I know my house has no electrical wiring or load bearing problem, because I checked those by professionals; and anyway, my sister's PC is working fine. So, why this problem with my PC?

It is about $100.00 cheaper to purchase this one that only has 1 ide channel. I was wanting to know if the extra money would be needed to buy one with 2 ide channels.

Hello everyone, basically my computer is not turning on at all because of my power supply (i think) because on my psu (power supply unit) there is a switch to switch between 230V and 115V and when it was turned on it was on 230V and I just messed with it and put it on 115V which turned my computer off, and there was smoke coming out of my Psu and also light flashed from my PSU, Do you think my whole computer is wrecked or just the PSU in it? Is it worth me buying a new PSU or no? Sorry for the long mesage. Your help would be deeply appreciated and will definetely also get a rating. Thanks

My computer is old and I fear that it could crash at anytime. Therefore, I would like to find a way to store a copy of my hard drive. I'm not savvy enough with computers to figure out a way to save a copy myself. I'm sure there must be companies out there that offer "back-up" service. If you know of such a company, please send me the details. Thanks

I bought a new computer, it's running Vista Home Premium. When I click to shut down sometimes it closes all programmes, the monitor goes on standby, but the tower is still on. It happens about half the times I shut down, the other half it goes off fine. I've looked at the 'Change what the power buttons do' part in Contol panel and it's set to shut down when I press it so that's not the problem.
Can anyone help please?
