Are you unable to read them from the computer that wrote them or another computer.

Troubleshooting computers is all about isolation. You have a handful of variables, so test until you can narrow your problem down to just one or two.

Here are a few ideas:

Try reading the files from both your computer and another. If one works, but not the other, then the computer is the likely culprit.

Try saving a different file type, if that works, then try saving the bitmap from another computer (email?).

Make sure that the drive doesn't have permissions set on it or some type of security encryption.

I don't think you read bitmaps. What I do is open a new Word document and Insert, Picture, from file -- indicate the name and location of the bitmap and click Insert.
(I'm in Office 2000, also.)
