I have A Sony VAIO PCV RX540 I got from a friend for free! It has a 1.2 Ghz Intel Celeron processor with 512 mb ram, 64 mb DVI TV tuner card, Really slow DVD burner, and a CD RW drive. There is a 20 gb hard drive with Windows XP home SP2 on it. It was made in 2001. Is this a good computer where all I have to do is upgrade the DVD burner , Hard Drive and reinstall the operating system? Or should I ditch this one and get a new one. All I want to use this computer for is basic Internet browsing, word processing and light gaming (older less good video games). Please help!

throw in another 512 of ram get a new burner and load the operating system on a new hardrive and it should be ok .. gaming will be affected by how good the graphics are or if it has integrated graphics or an agp slot to upgrade the videocard ..

Well it sounds to me like it can handle everything you are asking it to do. Burning DVD's is a time consuming process even with a brand new burner, it took me a little over an hour to burn a dvd on my nephew's brand new desktop the other day. I'd say enjoy the free laptop. About the only thing I can see upgradable on that is the hard drive. You can find an 80 gig on ebay for about $80. Myself, I have an old Dell Latitude from the same era, no DVD burner though. You'd be surprised on the amount of games it plays. I bought mine 2 years ago used, had to replace the screen, it had some funky lines in it, and I've been using it 3-5 hours a day ever since.
You might be able to throw some more ram in it, mine is maxed out at 512 mb.
btw give DZE the ten points, because she has gorgeous eyes!

I would buy a new one.
How old are the games?
Celeron 1.2 sounds slow, but I cannot find anything faster than Pentuim 3 1GHz for an upgrade and it looks like it's not a big difference.
It is ok for word processing and some internet browsing. Some sites with a lot of animation may look slow. Also antivirus will slow you a lot.

Still good enough for internet, downloading, MP3, DVD, and light office apps BUT NOT games. Aside from a DVD burner, increasing RAM and adding a bigger hard drive would do wonders to that PC.

I had something similar and used it for the same kinds of work. I upgraded the hard drive and processor recently, up to 80gig hard drive and 2 gig amd xp2400+ and stuck in a radeon 9200 graphics card (128Mb). The kids used it for games and the internet with no probs

I would say upgrade it. You can get a better processor, more ram, better graphic card and more hard drive space. It shouldn't cost a lot to upgrade. I would recommend going to newegg.com because they have really good prices for the upgrade parts you need.

Except for the DVD burning, it sounds like you are ok.
So get an external DVD burner and you're good to go for cheap.
