Hello everyone, basically my computer is not turning on at all because of my power supply (i think) because on my psu (power supply unit) there is a switch to switch between 230V and 115V and when it was turned on it was on 230V and I just messed with it and put it on 115V which turned my computer off, and there was smoke coming out of my Psu and also light flashed from my PSU, Do you think my whole computer is wrecked or just the PSU in it? Is it worth me buying a new PSU or no? Sorry for the long mesage. Your help would be deeply appreciated and will definetely also get a rating. Thanks

As said before it's probably just the power supply. Chances are that you can find an old junker PC that the power supply is still good in and pull it to try in yours. If it works then you can decide whether to buy a new one, or just use the one you dug out of another machine. This can save you $50+ which is about the price of a new power supply.
If you would have unplugged the computer before switching it back to 115 then it probably would not have done any damage. Take that one as a learning experience. I don't think you are a dumbass. You just didn't know.

well you should not have switched it to 230v to begin with, because in NA as far as i know - they use 110v system. Normally it should not have fried anything, but for some reason it seems thats what happend to your psu.
To tell you the truth, you could try getting a psu from best buy to check if its just the psu thats mssed up (if you are really lucky) - if not then just return the psu to best buy or Circuit City or wherever - and get yourself a new system. Just be careful when you mess around with your internals, make sure to ground yourself before you handel anytihng.

If you have a good PSU, Diodes in there should block extra power to go out to your Motherbrd and HDD and stop frying it. So my suggestion, replace the PSU first. If it doesn't work, then you know you have done a bigger damage.
Hope it helps...

Odds are, you only smoked the power supply. Try a new one. Should work. In Europe use 230v, and tape it so it will not happen again.

SHOULD be only the PSU, they are designed to fail without taking the mainboard, but sometimes they do.
With the wrong voltage it usualøly fries itself quick enough to not do any more damage. Insert new PSU and check though . . .

It is more likely that you just burned/fried the power supply. Depending on how big it is, they are not all that expensive. I would try a new pu and hope that no damage was done to the mother board.

i would start with a new PSU, hopefuly you didn't fry any of your electronics but from the sounds of it you only fryed the PSU and it didn' make it to your components. just to find out go get a $80 PSU from tigerdriect or newegg and see if that solves your problem

My uncle had this same problem he refered to GEEK SQUAD and they told him that he had either fried his power supply or fried his mother board.
