The specs for the mobo i bought is at ASUS M2N-MX (SE) Socket AM2 Mainboard +
AMD Athlon 64 6000+ X2 Dual Core CPU +
2 x 1Gb DDR2-667 RAM
this pc is currently running Vista but it seems the new mobo has more ports for sound than the old one does.

The manufacturer states that this mobo is compatible with 939 socket and the AM2 socket, is this possible?

Your old board and your new one are BOTH in micro-ATX form factor. You should have no problem upgrading to that new set up. The backplate included in the new board should take care of the back panel ports. You will have to remove the old backplate.
Be ready with your driver CD once you boot with your existing hard drive. Vista will ask for the drivers of that new motherboard.

Im sorry. your origional motherboard has a 939 cpu socket. the Asus m2n-mx is a AM2. I would recommend the ASUS A8V-XE. however they also have very different chipsets which will cause a problem when switched. frequently windows will blue screen at boot when chipsets are changed. which means you would need to perform a windows repair or reload if that is the case. hope this helps. :)
