My computer has had some upgrades recently; its a Dell GX260. I put in a gig of ram, a new graphics card and a new hard drive. Everything was fine for about 2 months, then all of a sudden last week the fan started running nonstop. From the moment I turn it on to shutting it off the fan is running full speed, and its very noisy. I dont think I've actually heard it run before. The interior of the pc doesnt look dirty, although there was an accumulation of debris on the outside which I wiped down. Any ideas what could have caused it and how to stop it or fix it?

assuming I have to change the cpu fan and apply thermal compound (something I've never heard of) anyone got a good website that describes how to perform said service or any tips on doing it? thanks

and quick question: will it hurt the pc to run in this manner for a week or so, or should I shut it completely down til said service is performed for fear of it blowing up or something?

As Dullie said some new putty on the cpu and a new cooling system sounds like the perfect solution.

Even if it looks clean when you look at the inside, remember to speacially check that there are not dust clogged in the heatsink under the cpu fan. Its very important to keep a clean iside and may I ask you when you cleaned the heatsink for dust last time? ;P

Meanwhile you can try to open the task manager (rightclick the taskbar and choose Taskmanager) and check if there are any Processes that are using an abnormal amount of cpu and memory.

Maybe you have a conflict in the programs or maybe your computer needs better hardware.

Please remeber in these cases that the more details you give in your question, the easier it is to answer.

The fan is connected to a temperature sensor. The warmer it gets inside your computer, the faster (and louder) the fan runs. It will be OK to let it run that way for a while.

Redoing your thermal compound may help, but it is a painstaking process and may not make much difference. Probably the most bang for your buck would be to invest in a can of "canned air", sold almost anywhere they sell computer stuff. Unplug your computer and open it up. Give the whole thing a once-over,and pay special attention to the heat sink, a finned block of metal with a fan attached to it. Dust in the fins interferes with cooling. If you can figure out how to remove the front cover, you may be astonished how much dust has accumulated there. The air usually enters at the front.

Hi, CPU fans are supposed to run all the time. Slow downs on pc's can be due to the number of programs running at the time or maybe a fragmented hard drive. A bit more memory may help but I could do with knowing the computer specs to be more specific. Arnak

First of all, the fan runs constantly when the computer is on, it doesn't turn on and off automatically. Adding the new "stuff" didn't cause it to run any more or any less.

It could be the noise you are hearing is caused by dust build up on the fan blades.

computer fan (Located in Power Supply Unit) starts working until the power is off.

Previously you might have not noticed due to its noiseless working. now i think the fan alignment or some dust inside has caused it working with noise. Fan is very cheap and can be easily replaced.

Sounds like it's time to replace your cpu fan ad apply some new thermal compound.
