If it shipped with Vista then it is possible that HP took steps to prevent the downgrade to XP, check their site for the specs on your hardware and wish real hard.

First, have you installed your mother board drivers? Check in control panel / system/ networking and see if xp installed your drivers for you: IF NOT go to the mother board mfgrs web site, (mfgr and model is on the mother board) and down load and install those. Now connect your pc directly to your modem(not through your router) with the rj-45 cable. Run your net working wizard( or your ISP software) and when it asks for your wep key (its the 10 digit number code in brackets on the back of your modem) type it in without the brackets follow the rest of the simple instructions and your pc will have internet . Reconnect your router and your pc through your router. If you have wireless it will give you that also. HP web site has only Vista drivers so dont bother with their site.

If you are using wireless, try plugging it into the router with a patch cable. The rest of themare correct in thattrhe hardware might not be compatible with xp

If you are using high speed, reset the modem, if that doesn't work, check the ip address by typing ipconfig in the command prompt

You might have lost the network driver.

You need to install ISP e.g. yahoo bt broadband. Of course you need to install the network drive (you should have this in utilities disk).
