I am thinking of learning SQL. I have some knowledge of programming languages such as BASIC and COBOL, which I did many years ago at school. Do you suggest I learn SQL by joining a course at college, or do it via distance learning, or by myself a book and teach myself?

What job prospects do I have after learning SQL? I suppose I would have a problem getting my first job. i.e. no job no experience. How can I get practical work experience using SQL, without getting a job first? (which is the main question that employers ask at interviews)

Should I move on or tell them? I picked up a part time job for a little extra money. I'm a homeschooling Mom, and my family comes first. I haven't worked in almost 4 years. I got a job at a local grocery store as a cashier. I was excited to have an easy job for 15-20 hours a week. In the month I've worked there, they have trained me on the front end and this week I'm scheduled as a shift supervisor. I'm not interested in this AT ALL. I hate that they have put me in the position to have to say something. If they were to pay me $15 an hour I might consider the extra responsibility, but not for my measly pay. I have to say something today...any ideas. My background is management and they know that, I think that's why they are doing this. I'm just not going to be a manager for my pay and I really don't any extra responsibility. I only want a job and that's it.

What should I say? Do you think I'm being a jerk for not willingly taking the extra responsibility? Help!?

I'm not putting down people who do, I just used it as an example. I have a college degree, but it hasn't worked out for me. Looks like I'm gonna have to give up and work at a place like that. Either that or a janitor.

Would it hurt me in the future if I refused a job offer, and then go back a yr or two later asking for a job again?

I want to interview at this place, but not sure about my plans in 8 months (upon graduation)...so I'm not sure whether I can accept the job offer or not. If i cannot and turned down the job offer, would that hurt me if I do want to come back to the same company in a few years?

Wouldn't it be easier on the employees and the person who makes the schedule to just make one set schedule? I work in retail and I can't stand that my schedule is constantly changing. Other industries give their employees a set schedule. I could even understand changing it once a month, but why every week. What is the actual reasoning behind this?

I'm considering to take up a master's degree program in marketing communication next year . I told my boyfriend about it and he totally disagreed with me, he justified that it will be much better to take up a master's degree after gaining a sufficient experience in that particular field. Well, his reason is justified but the thing is I believe that there will be more opportunities til we're young, right? So if I'll take up a master's degree probably after 5 yrs., I'll be 28 by then and I'll be able to finish the program after 2 yrs. I dont want to wait that long co'z it seems that it's a waste of time, there so much to learn and I want to learn those now, not after 5 yrs. or so and by that age I want to have my extra time with my family, taking care of my kids, etc. got my point?

I'm interested in a career were I'm not attached to a desk for 12 hours!! Working on computers I'm setting at a desk for hours. I recently got a job at a MAJOR media company and find the work to be boring and unimportant. I want a career were I can make a difference and see my work first hand. I was thinking about an architect but after the building is created, I'll be out of a job. Even though I've always been fascinated by the size and presence of large structures. Also a little recognition would not hurt.

P.S. I don't mind getting my hands dirty either. I was thinking about a construction manger, or a intelligence agent or U.S. Marshall. The work does not have to be physically challenging just fun and active.

What do you think?

I'm 19, I live in an apartment complex that is made up of mostly people over the age of 65. I was wondering if I set up a bake sale, do you think that I'd profit well from it? Especially if I include sugar-free items as well?

We are the only two employees in the main office besides the owner. There are three employees at a construction jobsite office. My coworker is a project manager and I am the office manager/accountant/IT guy.

Here's the situation: We have both been looking for jobs (on the sly) for like three months. We've both been on four or five interviews. She (my co-worker) got a job offer yesterday (Thursday), and I got a job offer today (Friday).

We want to give notice at the same time just for the effect, because we both agree that he's a terrible boss: He's never expressed appreciation for any of our workplace accomplishments (except sarcastically). He has always been very negative about everything with his comments, which are often either derogatory or sarcastic.

So does anyone have any good ideas? So far our plan is to go together into his office on Tuesday morning, sit down, and announce that we both have new jobs. Or should first one go tell him, then the other follow in five mins?

I currently work 3 minutes away from my house (I live with my parents in the country) and I received a job offer to work 2.5 hours away from my home in they city. It pays twice as much as I'm making now. Cons: I have to buy a new car (the one I have now is not reliable), pay rent, and I would be away from my family and my loving boyfriend.
I'm feeling a little queezy about all this. My bf supports me, but I'm sad because of the distance there is going to be between us. Am I being silly about this? Please comment!

I will graduate in June 2008 from an AAMT approved school with a certificate in medical transcription. I plan to work from home and I'm wondering if they're any books, besides the ones I already have, that will be useful. The books I have are: Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary, AAMT Book of Style for Medical Transcription, Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book, Annotated Medical Surgical Word Book, and Pronunciation List. I also have the foot pedal. What other materials would you recommend? Thanks.

I want to get a job as a housekeeper because I enjoy cleaning and I don't have to deal with retail jobs and deal with irate customers. The employment ads I see from other employers (especially, people who want you to clean their homes) pay very generously and not pay minimum wage unlike other jobs. Anyway, if I get hired to work as a housekeeper, which would be no problem for me, how would I convince my future employers that I prefer cleaning with natural products and not toxic chemicals products and for them to provide the products? Natural products are better for the environment and is not a health hazard than toxic chemical products. I wonder about this alot. Constructive advice is appreciated.

i work in the electricians union in las vegas, we work from 3AM-2PM 11 hour days, 6-7 days a week, and its VERY physically demanding heavy lifting and all that , my feet and hands are in pain every day and im only 18, not to mention las vegas's 100+ heat, every day im miserable and hate my life, but the money is pretty good, do you think it would be worth it to quit? i was thinkin bout goin back to school, to study in culinary arts, but the cooks union around here isnt as much money, or i would take some business classes to and maybe open up my own shop, but i think i would enjoy it more, but who knows, do you think its worth the risk for me to quit, to try out a profession for less money, but may or may not like more? is hating your job just a part of life? or should i strive for a job i love?
one thing to note is that i'm not actually makin that much bank right now, only about $10/hr(time and a half on overtime, and double time on sundays)
