I work for a non profit in Florida and we have about 6 months of funding availble for payroll. The organization is trying to apply for additional funds but we are not certain if they will come through. I am currently looking for a new job but there are few to chose from where I live especially paying a desent salary. At the end of the 6 months can I apply for unemployment if we are laid off? Thank you!!

Anyone can apply for unemployment, but not everyone gets it.

I work for a 501c3 also. We've had quite a few apply for unemployment over the course of the last year or so (1 was laid off, and 2 quit). Whether or not you get it really depends on your reasoning behind applying for it. You have a better chance of getting unemployment if you were laid off.

I know the one guy from our place that was laid off got it. Of the two that quit, one had quit after about 12 hours worth of work (1 1/2 days worth) and he got it. He also played the sympathy card when he did the whole testifying process during the hearing. He gave them a sob story about how he misunderstood what his pay was going to be and that he couldn't live off of the income he was going to get (non profits don't pay THAT great, as you know).

The other person that quit had told some of our staff that she was doing one thing, while she told other staff she was doing something else. When it came time for her hearing, she told the agency she had lied to everyone about her plans. She didn't get the money (thank god!), and had actually applied for a second hearing to try again for money, but she ended up "no-showing" for the phone hearing so they automatically declined her again.

Non-profits do pay into the unemployment insurance policy, but depending on your state, you'll probably have to do the haering also to verifty if you story is true. But, if you are laid off, chances are, you'll get the money.

Good luck with everything, and I hope your agency makes it.

By all means--unless it is designed
so that no taxes were paid into the state system. I believe the feds make up for that though. Call the employment office (better to go there!) and give them the title number and all that and they can tell you for sure. You also may be eligible for worker displacement, giving you school benefits. Check it out. Its all good.
and good luck!
