What do you think about a 20 dollar gift certificate for an elementary teacher in a card for Christmas? I figure it's gotta be better than the typical hand soaps, candles and that sort of thing. Or is a gift card tacky? To walmart or target?

My grandmother is going to die soon, and my father (it's his mother) is constantly "reminding" me that our extended family gets together for weddings and funerals.

Problem is, the funeral is 1500 miles away, which I don't have the time to drive, and airplanes are hard to come by, much less get a decent price right around Christmas! Not to mention my family is broke and has no extra money lying around to do this.

My dad thinks it's ok to go into debt for this, but I don't. I've been under a pile of debt for 6 years now and I've learned my lesson, and I'm not acquiring any more until it's paid off!

What should I do? What's a good way to break it to him that unless someone is willing to cough up some $$, I'm not going to be there.

May I please have a star? Thank you.

Thanks for all your opinions!

These two pretty much despise me .They don't ever speak to me and one doesn't even acknowledge me when we are in the same room.We work different shifts,(thank God). But there is another girl there on their shift that will be getting a gift.I can't spend much this year ,so I am making jewelry for them. So,Is it tacky to not give those two anything?

Our tax goes on slobs. People who cant be bothered to work. I appreciate the people who maybe dont work, but help at home, clean, look after their kids. But I dont apreciate people who sit at home, watch T.V all day, for free. And get free money!
Your opinion please? :]

I am in the process of divorce... Bummer
But a friend suggested I have a "I'm Divorced" party with friends at a club. I know Shanna Moakler had one and it looked like fun I guess... But I feel it would be wrong of me. What do you think?

With people attending parties for the holidays, it is inevitable that a smoker will be attending.

As the host/hostess of the party, are you prepared to protect your other guests by asking this person to smoke outside (hiding any ashtrays)?

Some smokers think they have the "right" to smoke in the presence of others, they do not. They don't have the right to harm another health, and it has been proven that second hand smoke is harmful to those nearby.

How do you handle smokers?

You were moving out in less than 3 days and your psycho roommate (who never lifts a finger to clean) started screaming at you to clean before you leave?

I have been through so much crap with this guy (not my boyfriend, just a roommate) and I clean the house every week and he never cleaned anything, left his messes for me and he has the audacity to yell at me like I am his slave. I am going to leave the house how he left it and clean my area, of course.

What would you do?????

I recently graduated from college, and I received a congratulations card with no money/check. I'm not complaining, since I didn't send out announcements to receive gifts. I sent them out to announce my graduation, but I know that people do send gifts, so I bought thank you notes.

Anyway...I planned on sending thank you notes for those who sent congratulatory cards, but my husband thinks that it may be rude...kind of like saying "gee, thanks for the card". I don't want to be rude, or make anyone feel awkward, and I can't find the "rule" on this one.

I'm sure someone has encountered this situation, and there is an etiquette rule on this out there that I can't seem to find. So...

Please share if you have the info, or if you've already tackled this one!
Thanks!
:)

I would like to send my X-mas cards (bought a bunch at the dollar store) but with the price of stamps these days, it is a bit expensive.

I would like to send them all as COD for the stamp amount.

COD = Cash on delivery.. So basically the people that would receive the x-mas card would need to pay the 42 cents for the cost of the stamp in order to get the card. Plus, I'm not sure if I can request COD for 42 cents - especially for a stamp ... anyone know?

my fiance is always correcting me, especially when i comes to pronounciation of certain words... which I just pronounce based on where I grew up...she actually gets mad if dont say them the way she thinks they should be said...this to me is the stupidest reason to get upset at someone. also im an honors student, in grad school, and have never had a gpa below 3.5, if anyone should be correcting people it should be me, but I DONT! that is why i find it so annoying when people correct me especially over superfilious things like pronounciation. how do i deal with this, i dont want to be mean to my fiance and put her in her place as my ego tells me to.

I've always been a good listener...too good. People who talk too much gravitate towards me. I have told Chatty Cathy over and over at work that I need to stay out of trouble with the boss and stop talking (not that I get a chance to do any of the talking), and that I'd be happy to talk to her at break. She will stop talking for a while, but low and behold she can't seem to stop this annoying habit of talking to me. I feel it's cheating your company to misuse work time. It's one thing to chat for just a minute or two, but to go on and on for 20 minutes or more is just plain too much. If I say anything to her other than what I've said, she is the type to get insulted and act put out. What's wrong with people like this?

If you were once a teenager than you know what it's like. So many rules... but one of them esspecially is DONT LOSE YOUR VIRGINITY. To me personally, I dont think it's such a big deal if you do it becuase it was "correct" at that time..? I know that dosent make sense but an incorrect way to do it would to get back at your 8th grade boyfriend.. now that's stupid. But anyways... When do you think its a good age to consider it? Please dont say when you get married becuase we all know that 98% percent of people who get married have allready done it 4 - 5 times... or more. I'm only 14... but I wouldn't want to go to college and not know what to do if in that situation. Of course... I wont jump to it right now... that's dumb. I would wait till I found a good guy who understood me and stuff like that.... but lets not get all mushy like that... it's time for answers.

i mean c'mon. that's got to be a personality trait that is a common denominator of all the people that report abuse on the most petty of issues. these are the type of personalities that won't move out of the passing lane on a highway, just becasue they want YOU to drive how they feel is "safe."

to hide behind anonymity makes it too easy for judgemental do-gooders to abuse the "report abuse" button.

A friends and I went to a “high class” function. (We work together at the same school and we talk all the time.) It was a fund raiser for AIDS research. I was invited by friends of other friends. By the time we got to the dinner, it was six of us seated at the table. The occupations of the people that were seated at the table were a Physical Therapist, Accountant, Chemical Engineer, a 'Tech guy," a high school counselor (me) and a school Cafe. Worker. (The Cafe. Worker came with me.)

(HERE IS THE ISSUE)
The question of occupation and salaries came up. I felt a little uncomfortable because with this bunch anything under six figs seemed to be chump change. So after they ask my friend (The Cafe Worker) what she made, after she told them the looked at each other for a second and then started to laugh. (I will be honest, I was mad as hell). My friend (Café Worker) was noticeably uncomfortable and felt out of place. They then asked what her salary was.

That is when I BLASTED their snooty aizzez. I don't remember everything I said, but it was enough to turn heads at other tables. Many people thought I was rude and mean. After I said what I had to say, no one spoke to me the whole night and the friend that invited me was very embarrassed by my actions.

(TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT)

On the way home my friend (Café Worker) thanked me for taking up for her, but she said that she did not want to go to any other events with me. She felt we really operated in two different worlds. (I was hurt by that b/c we had been friends for five yrs, but that is not the issue at hand.) The person who invited me called my cell phone while I was driving on the way home and cussed me out for embarrassing him and hanging with “low lives.” So I cussed his aizz right back, he wants nothing to do with me after this b/c he said that I ruined is “networks” (????)

(QUESTIONS FOR YOU)

1. Was I wrong for letting them have it at the fundraiser?
2. My friend at school (the café worker) no longer wants anything to do with me b/c she thinks that I have set her up for failure. Even though she is one of my best friends, Was I wrong for inviting her?

P.S. Please provide objective advice. I am a brotha that has lost two good friends by just going to a dinner party.

A friend from work has invited me to her home for Christmas. I had only planned on a gift for her, her husband and their pets. Now she's emailed me saying that her son and daughter, her mother, grandmother, her husband's friend, the friend's girlfriend, her cousin and brother will also be coming. I really don't think I should be expected to give gifts to all those people, especially when I don't even know them. But why would she email me to tell me that? Please advise. Thanks.

I'm a first year second grade teacher with a principal and vice principal who are kind enough to come in early once a week and prepare hot drinks for the teachers and donuts.

I had two donuts in a napkin, a cup of coffee, my purse, briefcase, attendence folder, etc in my arms. I dropped one of the donuts on the floor, hesistated, then picked it up in front of another teacher and the two principals and put it back with the other.

Should I have thrown it away?
