I've always been a good listener...too good. People who talk too much gravitate towards me. I have told Chatty Cathy over and over at work that I need to stay out of trouble with the boss and stop talking (not that I get a chance to do any of the talking), and that I'd be happy to talk to her at break. She will stop talking for a while, but low and behold she can't seem to stop this annoying habit of talking to me. I feel it's cheating your company to misuse work time. It's one thing to chat for just a minute or two, but to go on and on for 20 minutes or more is just plain too much. If I say anything to her other than what I've said, she is the type to get insulted and act put out. What's wrong with people like this?

In this situation, you should worry about yourself first. You've politely told her you do not want to get in trouble with higher ups at your work but are willing to listen when you two are on break. The fact that she continues to talk to you for too long each day is disrespectful to your wishes. I would tell her one more time, that you would prefer to keep the long chats during breaks only and if she doesn't respond to you being nice, you'll have to be more firm to get your point across. Which is worse, an offended co-worker or a pissed off boss?

Avoid her as much as you can. Is there a place you can work in private, like an office?
Or just be more stern with her when you tell her that you cant afford to talk all the time, you have work to be done.
Maybe you should talk to your boss, say that you love your coworkers, but they arent working for the team because they are constantly helping you in not gettin your work done. Dont try to tattle so much, but honest.

Tell her to shut the f-- up. until break . and if she gets angry tough. Let her know, that while the company may be paying her to talk 'all the time", you are being paid to work, and that is what you intend to do.
Who do you need the most. Your job or Chatty Cathy???

Sounds like she needs something to keep her busy. Get her a couple of word search books for Christmas, and tell her you heard the boss saying if he/she caught anyone talking excessively, they are fired. She will think you are trying to help her out.

Just tell her what you wrote here, and do not worry about her being upset for a little bit.
She probably will choose someone else to be chatty with.

Ignore her if you can. Continue working and maybe she'll get the hint.

I wouldn't worry too much about her being "put out". You'd probably be better off without her.

Maybe they're just too easily bored or something and have to continuously talk to keep from jumping off a building. Just try to not let it bother you too much.
