I recently graduated from college, and I received a congratulations card with no money/check. I'm not complaining, since I didn't send out announcements to receive gifts. I sent them out to announce my graduation, but I know that people do send gifts, so I bought thank you notes.
Anyway...I planned on sending thank you notes for those who sent congratulatory cards, but my husband thinks that it may be rude...kind of like saying "gee, thanks for the card". I don't want to be rude, or make anyone feel awkward, and I can't find the "rule" on this one.
I'm sure someone has encountered this situation, and there is an etiquette rule on this out there that I can't seem to find. So...
Please share if you have the info, or if you've already tackled this one!
Thanks!
:)

It would depend how you wrote it.
Dear Mabel & Mo,
Just a quick note to thank you for your congatulations card. It meant a lot to know you were thinking of me,
Love,
Mary
would be great.
Dear Mabel & Mo,
Thanks a lot for sending me a card!
Mary
might seem a little sarcastic, maybe even obnoxious.
Forget whether or not there is a "rule", just play it by ear and heart.

Did anyone send gifts?
Call them all, give them each a nice chat, and thank them. In your conversations, do not mention what others might have given, whether it be cash, gifts, cards, or nothing at all.
Save your thank you cards for future occassions, for they are sure to come!
You've graduated college and you're married... quit relying on what may or may not come your way and get on with your career. Hope it's a good one.

If the person who sent only a congratulations card, just send them a quick thank you in an email (if they have email).
It's not mandatory to send a thank you card when you receive a congratulations card.

I dont think it would be rude to send the card, however I don't think you HAVE to unless there is a gift involved. But since you bought them anyway, it doesn't hurt.

I would send one. Technically it is still a gift even though there was no money. Just tell them you really appreciate their card and thank you for the encouragement in this turning point in your life.

You do not have to send a thank you for a card, only a gift. Otherwise, we'd constantly be sending cards back & forth.

I don't think that you send thank you notes for receiving a card. If it had money in it, you would.

I think a thanks for a card is just fine if you want to send one, but not required. I certainly don't think that it would be rude to thank someone for a card. On the contrary, I think they'll find it to be a lovely gesture.

Its really up to you. This person didnt send you a gift, so you dont have to thank them, but they did send a card , so its up to you if you want to thank them for that gesture or not. There is no ettiquette rule for that.
