I'm a first year second grade teacher with a principal and vice principal who are kind enough to come in early once a week and prepare hot drinks for the teachers and donuts.
I had two donuts in a napkin, a cup of coffee, my purse, briefcase, attendence folder, etc in my arms. I dropped one of the donuts on the floor, hesistated, then picked it up in front of another teacher and the two principals and put it back with the other.
Should I have thrown it away?

You acted on impulse. I think most of us would do the same. I wouldn't be grossed out if I saw you do that. It's not like you were outdoors. The rug probably was just vacuumed. Don't worry about it. Now I want a donut.

Yes, you can use the five second rule at home, but never with others. Now, the way to deal with that situation is a fake throw away. Take the five second donut and place it apart from your "good" donut, like you are keeping it separate until you can throw it away. Of course, you will eat it as soon as the coast is clear!

I think you should have. And I'm not a huge fan of the 5 second rule. Doughnuts have glaze which is sticky...and sticky gets hairs and such stuck to it. If you had dropped a cracker or something like that, I don't think it would have been such a big deal. But now, come on...that's pretty nasty.

Did you eat it? 5 seconds works when at home alone.
Next time drop all that other stuff off in your classroom or office prior to getting the donuts.

You should be aware that anything that touches the floor like your doughnut in this instance will get dirty. You might hesitate licking the bottom of shoes in the same way. But you might be operating unde the rule of "Do Not Waste Food". It is your judgment call. If you eat it, you might be exposing yourself to dirt and if you don't eat it, you might be exposing yourself to guilt.
Improve your motor skills.
Try team sports.

It probably appeared that you were just being considerate in picking up something you'd dropped. Don't beat yourself up about it, but I don't think you win many points in any social situation by eating food that's been on the floor...

Yes, watch the Mythbusters episode and you will never eat anything dropped on the floor again--it's sickening.

I agree, you can do it at home, but what I imagine is all the extra germs on a schools floor....hope you enjoyed the donut and don't get sick...

Unfortunately, you should have. While I'm a believer in the "5 second rule", many people are horrified at the thought of it.

When you are in a professional setting, you are also in a political arena. Do the PC thing always unless you know the folks around you for years and years... and know they will forgive you.
