I have found that there are different times that making small talk was not the best idea. Sometimes it opens the doors to some things that you may not have wanted to discuss and in turn makes a difficult situation for you. It is really hard to figure out when it is right or not. I think the best way is to evaluate the situation, decide the ultimate outcome you desire and decide from there. Hope this helps!

Funny you should ask this. My hubby came home last night and gave me a perfect example of the wrong time. His boss's spouse was giving a tour of the facility to some men from China who speak just some English. While waiting to start the tour, the "tour guide" started making gossip with one of the employees. The tour guide is a man and was gossiping and giggling with a female worker of his wife's. BAD time for small talk. I can't imagine what the Chinese guests thought.
