With people attending parties for the holidays, it is inevitable that a smoker will be attending.

As the host/hostess of the party, are you prepared to protect your other guests by asking this person to smoke outside (hiding any ashtrays)?

Some smokers think they have the "right" to smoke in the presence of others, they do not. They don't have the right to harm another health, and it has been proven that second hand smoke is harmful to those nearby.

How do you handle smokers?

If you host a party and know for a fact this may be an issue, provide an out of doors area with an over hang to protect from rain or snowfall. Then inform all your guests ahead of time a smoking area will be provided. OR inform your guests that smoking is prohibited unless they choose to smoke outside at least 15 feet from the door (law in some states).

I smoke, and would never consider smoking in someone elses house, especially at a party. Any one with manners would go outside.

If the party is in your house, as the homeowner, it is your perogative whether or not to allow smoking.

If the party is in a public building or restaurant, it depends on if the city ordinance allows smoking. You cannot and should not stop them from smoking if the law allows them to smoke in the public establishment.

It might be a good idea to put a small non-smoking sign inside the house.

I haven’t had a smoker yet who hasn’t asked before lighting up, and then they’re told to go outside.

If anyone ever doesn’t ask, I’ll request that they do go outside.

most everyone in my family who smokes just does so outside. especially if the host is a nonsmoker, they assume it to be the case and are respectful. i don't know why others wouldn't do that. seems so presumptuous. hehe

i think it is just understood these days that you're supposed to go outside at a house that isn't yours when you smoke. i know that if someone smoked in my house without my permition, i would be highly offended.

its your choice to allow them to or not, but i think the instinct is to go outside with your cigs.
