Toddler & Preschooler - July 2007

My husband is in the army and so when they go out into the field for weeks at a time, all of the wives spend a lot of time together. Recently I was at one of the other wives' houses and my 2 year old daughter and her 3 year old son were eating popsicles and playing outside. So, naturally when we brought them inside, we just threw them in the bath tub. My friend happened to have taken a picture of them playing and today my husband saw the picture on her myspace. Needless to say, he wasn't too happy about the picture. He yelled at me saying that there was no reason for them to be bathing together, but I think it's fine. I mean, they are toddlers. Which of us is right? Was I wrong to let my daughter take a bath with that other little boy or is my husband exaggerating?

I was at the grocery store today in the check out line and my 4 yr old at asked me "Mommy, why does that lady have a boy hair cut?". I tried to pretend I didnt hear her and she repeated it again very loud. I know she heard and I felt terrible because you never know the circumstances. When we got outside I explained to her that everyone has different hair cuts and its not polite to say stuff like that. Just wondering if anyone has any good stories to share?

My 22 month old Danny diagnosed with autism. Was happy, healthy and met all milestones up until February when he completely regressed. We are starting ABA and OT for him. Do you think I should refuse all his future vaccines. He is currently up to date. I tried to talk to my ped about this and she became angry and said not to blame her or vaccines for his autism. I was not blaming her or the vaccines. I just told her that I found out I was supposed to get handout pamplets before each vaccine and she never gave to me and I want to know what was in those vaccines especially since he had a triple vaccine in February that gave him fever, swollen leg and cried for two days. Any advice? I just do not want to risk harming my child any more than I may already have by getting all these vaccines.

My 3 year old daughter started preschool in March. I hardly ever had a problem with her listening and following directions. Since she has been in school, I have to ask her several times to stop doing something. She will stop for a few minutes, than starts up again. Or if I ask her to help me with something, she acts like she doesn't hear me. I am wondering if this is a common problem when they start preschool, etc...PLEASE HELP ME!!

Eg. We went to her doc's appt yesterday. My husband had to go to work from there and she would not even want to come to me and cried and cried for alsmot half an hour after my husband left and didn't even let me touch her.
Other eg; she would only have daddy chnage her diaper or feed her or take her for a walk and many more:((
I know she is just a tiny kid but sometimes this thing hurts me so much that i can not handle it. I feel bad that my own daughter does not want to come close to me.
I might be getting too emotional here but i do feel very hurt.
esp people;s comments like" Oh!she really is a daddy's girl. She dose not want mommy at all," etc
Do u think this is just a phase?is it common for small kids to prefer one of the parent to such an extent . esp dad over mom?
Thanks Much in advance.

I call my daughter Sweet pea. I gave her that nickname when she was first born and low and behold almost 4 yrs later she is not really that sweet. To me she can be sweet, but she's actually a bully at daycare, etc... I was wondering if anyone else has nicknames that do or don't fit their child?

My son goes to daycare once a week (just for exposure to other kids), and his birthday (5th) is August 29th...for reasons of vacation and other planning issues, his kids birthday party is being held Aug 18th. He will be in daycare monday July 23rd, but then wont be back again until Aug 3rd. I need the head count for the reservations by the 11th of Aug. Should i sent out the invites this monday, or after he returns to daycare? Ive only ever had family parties with him, and it didnt matter, this is the first year hes having a party with only kids, so its new to me. Thanks!

My 2 1/2 year old loves shoes. It was cute at first when he was like a year but now it's getting a litte weird. He won't leave the house without shoes, which is fine, but he will actually cry if you try to make him go anywhere without shoes. Also my boyfriend noticed a pair of shoes he bought me were missing. I didnt think much of it until this morning when my son was in his little electric car that he likes and he had hidden my shoes in there and was wearing them. It's not that he likes specific shoes he loves all shoes to the point when he will sit on the floor sometimes and look in the closet and remind us whose shoes are whose "daddy shoes" "mama shoes". We bought him some little flip flops as well and if he's sitting in the car and kicks them off by mistake he will actually cry to the point where he's almost hyperventilating until someone puts them back on. What unusual things can your kids not seem to live without?

I was 17 week pregnant, my baby was very sick and he can survive even if I wait to give birth. My doctor told me that I need to have a D&E because the baby was very bad and something bad can happen to me. I got a abortion but know I feel very bad and I can stop thinking about it. I have a healthy son and I love him with all my heart, and I don't believe and abortion, but I did'nt want my unborn baby to suffer more. I did the right thing?

My 3 year od little boy is generally a very sweet good natured kid, but about a month ago his behaivor turned completely around, when he gets upset or angry he hits people or he throws stuff, or he threatens to ruin things, a total little demon. I tried to think back this past month trying to figure out what could have triggered it. it seems like it all started when he got bronchitis a month ago, he was on antibiotics, steroids then, and last week he got bronchitis again 2 times in a month! he was put on all the same stuff again, but this time an inhaler too. then this week we were told he has asthma and allergies on top of the bronchitis, now he is on one of those breathing machines steriods and albuterol, and singluar and alavert. Anyways my point is, IS IT POSSIBLE HE IS SO FRUSTRATED WITH BEING SICK THAT THIS IS HIS WAY OF LASHING OUT AND SHOWING HIS FRUSTRATION?

we are considering putting our 14 month old in day care two days a week - he stays at home with my husband now. if he only goes two days a week, will it be hard for him to adjust going back and forth? do you think he will be a disruption to the others? my concern is that he is not on the same schedule as the day care, for instance, they have a 9:30 worship where they have to sit on a mat. ok my son has never had any kind of formal situation where he would be required to sit on his own. (maybe if he was strapped in a high chair, and someone was feeding him)

I know that you have to check how much sugar has been added to dried fruit, it is high in natural sugars anyway. My Girl is getting into dried fruit as a little in between meals snack. Raisins, golden sultanas, apricots, cranberries and papaya. Are these nutritionally good for her or should I avoid getting into the habit of giving her dried fruits. Her diet is very varied and she eats lots of fresh fruit and veg etc too.

My daughter began co-sleeping with her father and I very early on-- about 1 week or so. we didn't intend to, but she would fall asleep with her on our chest and we would end up falling asleep too. Then her father and I split up just before she was two. We both moved to new homes and she continued to sleep in our separate beds.

I have allowed this for several reasons: 1. It's just easier 2. Admittedly, I feel guilt about her father not being with us and she was definitely stressed but the split. 3. I feel like her inability to sleep in her own bed is my fault. 4. Her father has been unwilling to work with me and stop her sleeping in his bed at his house.

She is three now and it's is time she goes to her own bed. She will be starting pre-school in 1 month, where she will be attending full day classes. She is getting bigger. Plus... it's beginning to get uncomfortable for us (she thrashes around) and neither of us are getting any sleep.

Can I fix this with minimal stress to to her?

Our little guy is one of the happiest babies you'll ever see. He smiles all of the time. My husband and I are super loving parents. We aren't over the top hovering parents, we make sure that our son gets enough independent play time, but also spend lots of time doing floor play, hugs and cuddles with him. What we don't do is carry him around all the time. This is why we are surprised that he wants to be carried by his caregiver all of the time when at her house. Today in fact, he was climbing up the caregivers legs and also the contractors working at her house. The stranger thing is that when they are out of the house he is fine, he's back to his happy self again and will crawl or creep away from her to go play with the other kids.

What can we do to stop this? She's at her wits end, and I'm so worried that there is something there that is scaring him.

Thanks!

Our little girl will be a year old in 10 days and usually sleeps all night w/out assistance. Normally, she goes down around 8:30 ish and wakes up 8:30 the next morning, but every once in a while, on a church night or something, she goes to bed late. I noticed that last time this happened, she woke up around 6:00a.m. after going to bed the night before around 10:00 instead of her regular bedtime at 8:30pm.
