It might be a phase. All children go through a time where they are like little leeches. Thats what I call them. They hang at your side or in your lap. Or stays in the same room. You can't even go to the bathroom with out him. If this is happening I have gave them extra attenion and lots of encouragemet to go to some on else like daddy. Then when they are distracted I sneak a way but it only last for a couple min. But the good news is I have never had it last more than 2 weeks.
There is some things that can triger this. Like did he start school yet? Have you been leaving him some where new? Did something bad happen in your house? Did an older sibling say something scarry? Like there is a monster or bad man coming to get you! Did he watch the news or something that would be scarry to him lately? (The news is very scarry to young kids. Think about it!) A new baby or baby comeing?These are just some reason but most of the time they are feeling the need for more one on one time from you.

You should sit him down over ice cream and talk to him about it. At 5 they are old enough to explain their feelings. He may just be wanting more attention from you though, and in that case he may not realize that is why he is doing it. If he doesn't come up with a clear reason, try playing with him at designated times of the day, and see if he is satisfied with that.

He might actually not be scared, he may just be seeking attention. Kids sometimes go through phases where they fear abandonment (sometimes for no reason). He may just be desperately trying to keep you near him. It is a normal phase, but you should definetly talk to him and try to help him understand.

has there been any family changes recently? when my ex husband and i divorced my daughter was 5 then we moved to different house she followed my everywhere i couldnt even go to the bathroom alone if i 'snuck' off when she was preoccupied she would scream and run til she found me i guess she thought i would leave too

ask him why.Maybe he thinks that there is a ghost or monster in the house....
