My son goes to daycare once a week (just for exposure to other kids), and his birthday (5th) is August 29th...for reasons of vacation and other planning issues, his kids birthday party is being held Aug 18th. He will be in daycare monday July 23rd, but then wont be back again until Aug 3rd. I need the head count for the reservations by the 11th of Aug. Should i sent out the invites this monday, or after he returns to daycare? Ive only ever had family parties with him, and it didnt matter, this is the first year hes having a party with only kids, so its new to me. Thanks!

7/23 is too early- people will forget. Hand out the invitations when he returns to school, and make sure you talk to the parents and give them the invitations.

Aug. 3 is plenty of notice for a party on the 18th. Just bring the invitations along with you to his daycare when he goes, and pass them out to the mommies. Two big don'ts for you:
DON'T let him pass them out without your supervision- if he's just turning 5, he's probably not old enough yet to remember to give them out, or to read the names on the invitations and make sure they get to the right people.

DON'T pass them out in front of the kids. Give the invitations directly to the parents while all the kids are playing, or before pickup time or something. This is in case you are only inviting a few kids from his class, so nobody gets hurt feelings. Even if you're inviting the whole class, though, better to pass the invitations out to the parents in case they can't make it for some reason- nothing worse than a child being told he can't go to a birthday party for scheduling reasons when the rest of the class is going! That will be a tantrum!!!

Good luck, and give your boy a kiss for me!

Prepare yourself to be appalled at how few people have the courtesy to RSVP. Even if you could send it out 3 weeks ahead of time, you still will be calling parents on the 11th to find out if it's a yes or no. You might want to send out a "Save the Date" note before you leave for vacation and then when you get back ask for RSVP's by the 11th.

And still, there will be quite a few that won't even bother to tell you if they plan to come.

I would send them out the day that he returns to daycare.
