Autism? Are you kidding me?? The kid loves shoes! Give him a break.
My daughter has a different obsession every day! At this age, they just like things to be a certain way. It's a way to control something. As for the flip-flops--try getting him the kind that have a strap on the back (Children's Place has them), this has saved many near accidents from me trying to dig my daughter's flip flops out of the back seat to put on her! :)

hehe how cute, kids are so funny, and i know we mothers stress soo much when we see the weird things our kids do, always wondering if they have something wrong with them. Don't worry my 3 year old does the same thing, and we have a no shoe policy on our carpet in our house, so i have to buy her shoes that she only wears in the house, she just loves shoes, and if they are hot pink or crazy looking she loves them even more, so needless to say her favorite store is a shoe store she could live in it.
another thing she will not let out of her sight is her baby, a cabbage patch doll my mom bought her, she has had her baby since she was 9 months old. i have to fight for it to wash the thing, and I'm not kidding she looks for that doll while she is sleeping, she never ever lets it out of her sight.
kids are so entertaining have fun and enjoy they grow sooo fast.

My son will die without his Pillow. It was my favorite pillow when I was pregnant, but I gave it to him as a newborn so he could sleep with something that smelled like me...now, 2 years later, he won't let it out of his sight. That also means that it doesnt get washed as much as it should. This thing can get pretty ratty too...most of the stuffing fell out a while back and i had to do everything I could to find some more stuffing of the same texture, plus I had to be sure not to over or under stuff it. His pillow literally looks like frankenpillow! It has juice stains, and who knows what else. When I wash it i have to endure a tantrum from him, because when he picks up his pillow or lays on it to go to sleep, he sniffs it! If anyone else picks up his pillow, all hell will break lose. He will attack and yell until he gets it back. A part of me thinks it's cute...but the other part can't help but to scratch my head at my little weirdo.

thats great, mine does the same thing... he just freaks when you get him dressed and put on his shoes. He KNOWs were going somewhere, and he doesnt stop saying, "wanna go byebye" untill we go. Then when we're driving away, he makes it a point to say "see ya" and then all of our dogs' names. My 1 1/2 girl likes to bring me her shoes so she can wear them arounf the house, she walks and looks down, so cute. She also has an obsession with remotes and phones, loves to push buttons, but if you catch her, she brings it to you like thats what she was already going to do. Oh yea, the major obsession.... TOY STORY... they watch 1 & 2 like 6 times a day.... my son can act out just about the whole movie... hehehehe... i love babbies.

Does your child have any other autistic tendencies or unusual behavior?
If no, then it sounds to me like he just likes shoes. That's normal enough, I guess. Most kids like to play with their parents' and other adults' shoes because they are so big. That's typical. As for not wanting to go outside in his shoes, well maybe he is just a little tender or particular.
I suspect that what happened is that it was "cute at first" like you said and now that he is in his terrible twos, it is a way to get attention. When he throws a fit, you respond and he gets attention. When he hides your shoe, you respond and he gets attention. Probably he does this more often with shoes because he got praise for it early on when you thought it was cute.

It's been a few years, but my son had an obsession with hair. Mine in particular but in a pinch any ones with long hair would do. He liked to pull it through his fingers, twirl it, pet it and rub it on his face. He could not sleep unless he had someone with him so he could play with the hair as he fell asleep, and would come in our bed at night if he woke to repeat this ritual. I had Visions of him never moving out on his own. Or leaching onto the long haired girls at school when he started.
I bought a doll with long hair to put in his bed, and then tried a wig. No luck. Finally before kindergarten I just let him grow a "tail" so he could play with his own hair, and it worked.
I think you should just imagine your son is going to be the next Jimmy Choo, and make tons of money with his obsession.

my son gaige was like that too! omg he wouldnt leave them alone...he'd walk up to strangers and play w/their shoes and try to take them off their feet lol. he still likes to play with them sometimes...he loves the laces too. I bought him a pair of bright orange shoe laces and tied them in knots for him to play with in the car. I just bought him his first pair of light up shoes too and he just went absolutely crazy over them! But dont worry i dont think its anything to worry about....theres just something comforting about them...just like some kids want bottles, binkies, or blankets. If your that concerned ask his doctor what he thinks....

My son has an obsession with my hair, he has to pull it and caress everytime he gets near me. I know it is a security thing but it is a little odd to me.
