Toddler & Preschooler - February 2007

My son is 4 and he still has "accidents" several times a week. We have tried rewarding him when he uses the toilet, letting him pick out his new underwear, letting him choose a potty chair, and punishing him when he goes in his pants. His preschool has even told us he will not be allowed back into class if he doesn't improve. He is a very smart boy (knows his numbers, letters colors, shapes, etc) who does very well in school and has lots of friends, but I am starting to wonder if something is wrong with him. He is the 3rd child I have potty trained, but I have never had this much trouble. Please help!!!

We're thinking of buying a swing set for the kids this spring. We have a lot of snow where we live and I was wondering if it was better to buy a metal one or a wooden one? (they make them here). Maybe it's wise to treat the wood so it's protected? What's your thoughts on this?

What's a good overnight diaper? I've been buying Pampers Cruisers, which work really really well (my daughter hardly ever wakes up in a lake!); however, they are expensive at $20 a box. Can you recommend a good overnight diaper and don't say Parent's Choice or White Cloud as those store brands are crap!

I have noticed and have been told on numerous occasions by teachers, family, etc. that my son is extremely hyper. I know that all toddlers have some sort of hyperactivity at this age and it's normal, but my son never sits still. Even when he's sitting/standing he bounces.

My son's pediatrician has explained to me that it's normal blah blah but he see's him for 5 min every few months. I am concerned because his father suffers from ADD and I was diagnosed early with Bipolar disorder. I don't want to put my son on medication on such an early age which I know will happen if I take him to a psychiatrist. I don't want my son to be "labeled" like I was. I lived through my disease and never thought I was "normal" because my parent's always took me to doctor's who labeled me.

My son is happy now and that is my main concern. What about later though? I am worried about his future. Anyone going through similar problem?

Ok. I have a one year old little boy. He is the sweetest little fella, but lately I feel like he has been testing me. His latest thing is hitting my parents big screen TV. Now he knows he is not suppose to do this and every time he does I tell him no and take him away from the TV. Then he starts to think its a game. He actually turns around to make sure I am looking before hitting the TV. Anyway, I know I need to be consistent with telling him No and I am, but it doesn't seem to have much of an effect. Any tips. I know when he gets older I can do time out, but right now I would have to glue him to the chair to get him to sit there by himself, its just not possible. SO any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

My daughter is almost 3 years old. To this day she has never slept an entire night!!!! She doesn't seem to be having nightmares or anything, but I thought that by now she would sleep through the night or at least only wake up like once. She wakes up between 5 and 7 times a night, whether it's for a drink, to go potty, or to get in my bed (which is a WHOLE OTHER SUBJECT!!! lol) She goes to the doctors tonight and I am going to bring this up to him. I was just wondering if any of you have had the same problem with your children??? Also my daughter is VERY controversial, she back talks and just has this "attitude" that a 3 year should not have!!! I'm wondering if this could be from not getting proper rest?

My three year old niece lives with my brother and his wife in a house built in 1750. two times that I have babysat her she has woken up screaming. The first time she was in her cot, she woke up screaming pointing at a rocking chair in her room saying ‘nana, nana’ this affected her and she wouldn’t go back to bed. All of her grandparents are alive. This has also happened when my brother was at home. The most recent time I have babysat her she woke up and came downstairs screaming (she is now in a bed) and said that someone had crept up on her, and that her dad was pretending to be a wolf, but her dad wasn’t there, yet she still insisted that someone had crept up on her. The house doesn’t usually have any bad feelings about it although I do know that there was a fire in her room but that was fairly recently and I don’t think anyone was hurt. Could you explain this?!

My mil keeps spoiling my step-son. We tell him no snacks, no movies, no sleeping in the living room etc. and she steps in and gives him what ever he wants, saying I'm Grandma I can do that. Well my husband sits and does nothing saying she's my mom I can't do anything because it will upset her. She's told him before that he was a bad father because he sent his son to bed because he wouldn't eat dinner. and than caved in after she said he was a bad father, and let him come back out of his room. I am prego and I won't let her get away with that stuff with my child, how do I make sure that there isn't 2 sets of rules with the children? I have tried and tired to talk to him about this and he gets better for a day and goes back to his old ways. (his mom babysits 2 or 3 times a week.

I am so upset. DD was starting to sleep thru the night after we did modified CIO and now she is waking 3-4 times a night again. We were just on vacation for a week and she was horrible with sleep. She may need to adjust, but I am sooo frustrated with sleep, the bottle, her not walking, everything. I know I may sound harsh but she has been a pain in the butt since birth. it took her 2 hours to go to bed last night. I really do think my child will be the one on the bottle in kindergarten. She is sooo stubborn. I don't know what to do. I know I should chill out but I have tried every suggestion for sleep and for the bottle. We put water in her bottle, she loved it. Any other suggestions. I just know the older they are the harder to get them off the bottle. The sleep thing is killing us. She is almost 15 months old. AHHHH!!! any advice would be great. thanks Debbie

I was not sure how common it is for a child to learn to climb out of their crib. I have a 10 1/2 month old, and I took the bumper pad off, but I have a fear that he will soon learn to get out of his crib and break his arm or even worse.

My 4 year old whines constantly about everything. If he isn't whining he is yelling at his siblings. He also argues about everything, nothing seems to make him stop.

I am going nuts!
My son is over 3 and a half and has been fine going for a wee without accidents for at least a year now, in fact he skipped the potty altogether and went straight to using the loo, however, try as we might, no matter what we do, we just can't get him to poo anywhere but in his pants. I don't understand because he gets upset when he has an accident and has to be cleaned up but nothing seems to discourage him from doing it, he'll sometimes even blatantly denied he's had accident even though the room stinks!! We have tried EVERYTHING anyone (including our health visitor) has suggested, and nothing seems to work. Even when we set him on the loo he'll say he doesn't want to then 5 minutes later he'll have done it in his pants. I'm at my wits end! Please if anyone has any CONSTRUCTIVE advice I would be very grateful. He starts school next January and I have visions of having to send him in nappies as there's no sign of improvements!

My four year old daughter eats her meals unbelievably slowly, sometimes sitting with a mouthful in her mouth for ages and ages. She eats the meal eventually but yesterday it took her an hour to eat a slice of toast?
Its really frustrating cause you keep reminding her but nothing happens - any advice?

at the moment it doesn't seem to be too serious, but i'm concerned about it becoming worse. i was bullied at school, and i don't want my son to suffer the same. the main problem is down to one of the other little boys. as in all classrooms, there is usually one boy / girl who is the leader - very self-confident, loud, and likes to be 'in charge' of the other kids. this little boy has decided that he doesn't like my son, and therefore thinks that non of the other kids should like him either. as a result, my son is being left out of their games and being called names. my son is a nice boy who plays well with other kids and shares. the only reason why he's being singled out is down to this other little boy. normally, i wouldn't hesitate in speaking to the teacher about this, but i have the added problem of his teacher being the mother of this other little boy. how can i deal with this? i don't want this problem to continue when he goes to primary school in september.

I have a 22 month old toddler and she has close to a year old hair. Her hair is nice and strong and makes her more cute. I love her hair so much and I never intended to ever cut it. But lately everyone is saying I should cut it.They say its not healthy for her. They say her hair takes most of the nutritions. How true is this? She is petite and she weighs about 10kg
