Toddler & Preschooler - October 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pregnancy & Parenting Toddler & Preschooler

A co-worker has a toddler who is very afraid to go to sleep at night because he can hear the wind in his bedroom. The house was built within the last 5 yrs. Already tried moving his bed from the outside wall to the inside wall, and putting a quilt over the window. Don't want to use ear plugs as the child has sensitive ears and had some trouble hearing his first few years (and was a late talker). Any ideas?

My daughter is 2.5years and will only eat a few diff things mainly toast or bread. Its so frustrating cos I feed her all home made stuff when weaning and she would eat anything. Now its a battle at mealtimes. Ive tried no snacks between meals so she is hungry but it dont work. Should I give her what she wants after shes refused the other meal? I dont want her to starve!

I have a two year old boy who has a very bad discipline problem. He either will ignore me if I tell him something or start screaming and throwing a fit as if someone were beating him. It takes 45 minutes to get him to lay down to go to sleep. Half the time I can't get him to eat or pick up his toys. I've mentioned it to his pediatrician and she says that he'll grow out of it, but in the meantime....I'M LOSING MY MIND!!!!

now she has a huge limp on her head. I am scared. She didn't loose consciousness and only cried for a minute. I was told by my mom and my advice nurse to not worry and just watch her. What have other parents done in this situation? Should I take her to the ER just incase or watch her? She was playing and now she is sleepy. The nurse told me to let her sleep then wake her in two hours. Help! Paniced mom needs some reassurance!

My daughter refuses to listen to anything that is asked of her. If I ask her to clean her room she hits the floor in a tantrum or either completely ignores me. I get the same response when I tell her she can't have something or do something. She is almost impossible to take out into public because she runs off and we can't seem to make her understand the danger. She has went as far as going out into the parking lot without us. When we found her all she said was she wanted to go sit in the car. Can anyone give me some advise on how to get her to listen and follow directions. Please Help!!

I tried to call the doctor and they will not page unless it's an emergency..I'm a little worried because I gave him 1 teaspoon of it, I didn't fill it to the edge, just poured a little in the center of the spoon, I figured that was alright, But my mom said it could be too much...I can't get no one to give me the correct dosage I should give him, Now I'm a lil worried..So please if anyone can give me a little information on it I'd greatly appreciate it...He weighs 33 pounds and he will be 2 in December..It says on the bottle under 6 ask physician..But they won't page him for me..Please Help!!!

My daughter right from the start......I knew she was going to be trouble. She had to everything herself. EVERYTHING! Ughhh. We "argue" all the time. There arent any tantrums and I dont give in (here in the "problem"). She does cry easily when I dont give in but the "crying chair" is quite effective. She eats well, sleeps even better. She is very happy and incredibly strong. She did "sit ups" at 4 months when I held her legs. She can pump the swing herself. Rock hard abs. I should be so lucky! I just dont know how to effectively communicate with her so that we are both happy. She listens to everone else but me. I had to put her in daycare full time just so we didnt fight. Is this crazy or what?? I am a stay home mom with my baby in daycare until 5PM. I try and start my day with a positive attitude but within minutes of her waking up its "me do iiiiiiiiittttt!!!!!" She cant sit and play by herself.

Ideas, anyone????!!!!!

She has been in preschool for 1 1/2 now, all her school mates are writting their names & we practice at home alot. She has a simple 6 letter name, but cant seem to grasp it. Sometimes she gets it although none of the letters are quite right & it looks like chicken scratch. She often mixes all the letter up when she does put them all in. She has kndergarden roundup in 3 1/2 months & needs to legibly write her 1st & last name to get in. Does anyone have any tricks to teaching a 4 year old to write there name w/o bribbing (my hubby has tried that, it didnt work). Serious answers only please, thank you in advance for your advice.

My daughter, who is 5 today, is becoming a problem child. (Her father has ADHD; perhaps she inherited hyperactivity.) The last few months she has been misbehaving more and more. She does not listen to anything anyone says, she will not obey, pick up, stop whining, be quiet or settle down, and she will not stop destroying things (the latest stunt is cutting up - with her safety scissors! - her fabric-covered Disney Princess lounge chair). I have tried everything - rewards, time out, yelling, being patient and understanding, and yes, I have tried spanking. Two-thirds of the time she is sweet and loving, but a third of the time she is destructive, incorrigible, reckless and impossible. Someone please tell me what to do. Granted, the last few months I have been going through a divorce with her father - but it is amicable, we BOTH show her our love for her, and NOTHING is an excuse for this kind of behavior. I am at the end of my rope.
