Thanks for your insights on the subject, everyone. So I guess it really comes down to culture and if everyone feels comfortable with it. On the other hand letting your child sleep in your room can increase their dependency on you, so it can also be important to get them to sleep in their own bedroom at an early age.
Oh, and by the way, I dont have any kids. Its just something I've been wondering about, because my sister, who is 10 years old, still sleeps with my parents, which I think is a little ridiculous.

Depend on the culture really. I mean, there are lots of places in the US where people act like a child should NEVER sleep with their parents. In contrast, there are places where the whole family sleeps in the same room until the kids move out on their own. Here's the rule of thumb I would use, if the situation is making anyone who has to sleep in the bed uncomfortable, be it mom or dad or the kid, then the situation should change. If everyone is happy with it, then just forget what everyone else thinks. I doubt you are going to scar your child for life by letting him/her sleep with you.

ONe year,
and then they will enjoy going to their room if you so and promise to read a story to them every time.
I got my daughter a bunny book with 1 page stores...She loved them, and most of all she fell asleep after a paragraph or two.
You must have a smile and make sure the child has a night light.
Take them gently back to their room, saying nothing if they get up during the night.
Within a few nights of crying,
then about a week or two later....you may start to feel better.
Stop putting yourself on a guilt trip. A Child needs space the same as parents need adult space and adult time to talk.

It depends on the child and the parents.
You'll just know. Theres no "book" on a magic age.
A child shouldn't be there too long because it needs to limit its emotional attachements to its parents. It makes assimilating into society easier for them. If they become too sheltered, they long for the protection of mommy and daddy's love and maybe can't step out into the world to meet people, make friends and become socially functional.
On the other hand, if the child is less emotionally developed for their age, the comfort of loving parents can be what it takes to get them up to speed , so to speak.
Just trust your judgement. You'll know when the time is right.

I am a single mom and my girls are 4 and 6. They both sleep with me. If they need to sleep in their own room they do not object though. I know its not healthy because they need to develop indepence but they will in due time.

When they want to move on.
I think American culture has got it bass ackwards. Children develop independence in their own time. You can't force it on them without negative repercussions. Humans did not evolve sleeping alone. Infants are not wired for solitary sleeping.
My Daughter slept in my bed from birth to age 2.5, when she moved to a toddler bed next to mine. I was getting bad headaches from sleeping weird and we talked about it and she agreed. After age three she wanted to try her own room, so we moved her into her own space. She was welcome to sleep in my bed whenever she needed, but she rarely did. After age 5 she never slept with us again.

Around 5 years old. Train them and let them get used to sleeping alone slowly.
