Tell her to stop sucking her thumb and if she does not listen put her in time out and if that does not work use a little dot of chili it won't hurt her but she will think twice about putting her thumb in her mouth.

You can start off slow and tell her that she can't suck her thumb during the day (this works for my daughter at the moment). If that doesn't work, you can buy nasty tasting thumb sucking deterrent liquid from a pharmacy and brush it on her thumb. As a last resort, they do have contraptions made for thumb suckers available at onestepahead.com. Good luck!

tell them to wrap a bandaid around thier thumb. i sucked my thumb till i was 10! (im 19 now) and when i wanted to stop i just though that poop was on my thumb or somethign and made be keep it out of my mouth. i wanted to stop myself and wrapped a bandaid around my thumb. tell them if they dont stop there going to have sharp metal in thier mouth when their teenagers (braces) that will cut up the inside of their mouth, cause sucking your thumb gives a massive overbite..... lol thats what happened to me!

maybe not be too graphic with the braces though so you dont care them too much, your 5 yr old at least. but you may have too. just try the bandaid though. and if they dont stop in a few months then go to the doctors and see what they suggest.

most kids will give it up on their own, in time, however, if you are bent on stopping her you can pick up a hard plastic thumb guard device. it has a wrist strap and is secured over the thumb. see the link for more information
