I have a 4 year old boy who has autism. He will get into these horrible tantrums from time to time if he does not get his way. I mean they are awful he will scream to the top of his lungs and throw himself around. It is like he is in his own world and does not hear me when I try to comfort him. Anyone had this problem with autistic kids and what to do? Is there a medication, therapy or suppliment to try? HELP!

This is a spin-off from another question. I believe parents wouldn't spank if they knew more affective ways of disciplining. So, lets help those that don't want to spank by offering what we do.

I'll kick this off. When my children seem to be doing one behavior (i.e. not sharing, not eating, whining) that needs to be changed, I create a family star chart. If they refrain from doing the behavior, I put a star on the chart. For example, every time I see them share, they get a star, collectively. We don't keep track of who get which star. When the chart if full, they get the specified reward (a zoo trip, ice cream, movie, etc.). At the beginning, I have to preface activities by saying, if you share, you'll earn a star. Usually, they need about 20-30 stars for the reward. Something they can achieve in a week.

Other ideas?

I love to buy them expensive clothes, and toys...case in point, my 14 year old son has about 8000 in name brand clothes, a wall closet unit, a black leather chaise lounge, all the video games, his room is about 700sq.ft above the garage plus we have an inground, bought for the kids.
My son is NOT a bragging brat, shares everything, has many friends, volunteers at church daycare...he is a great kid, but I get alot of flack for giving them things.

I was spanked, most of the people I grew up with were as well and we turned out alright. Also learned respect, discipline, and what the word NO meant. (I'm 29) Now, kids have no respect for their elders, have such smart mouths, and consistantly whine until the parents give in.

What happened?

My daughter is going to be 10 in Feb. The hair on her legs is blond but very thick and long. She has been self consious about her hairy legs for about a year now. People, including family members, make comments about them. I was considering helping her to use Nair instead of shaving but am concerned that it will just make it worse if we dont keep up with it. I dont remember what age I started shaving at. For moms and dads with older kids... what age age did you start letting your daughters shave? Do you think I should start helping her use Nair instead.. or just wait till she is older?

My husband and I have an arrangement. I shave his face, the back of his neck, and his entire back and in exchange he gently shaves my legs and armpits and carries me to our bedroom and lays me on my stomach for a RELAXING back massage. Here lately, our 8-year-old daughter has seen me shave her father's face upteen times. Now, she is whining that she wants to shave her father's face. I am not sure if it is that she wants to do it or that she wants to do it because she sees me do it. Anyway, we have agreed that she can ONLY do it if I hold her hand and guide her through it. There is, of course, the issue of her holding a razor, but I would have control. We are not sure if we should let her or not, but I have a strong feeling we should, because we want to include her in this, too. Should we? Also, if we do let her do this, should we do something nice for her, too? I mean something like make her favorite food, something small to that effect. What do you think?

I have a daughter who will turn one this month. Her biological father hasn't seen her since she was born and hasn't had anything to do with her, no phone calls, support or anything else. This doesn't bother me because I told him when we split up that he either needed to be a full time father or stay out of her life. He is immature and self absorbed with making his own life happy.

I am wondering if there are any websites that will help me with information about making sure he can't try to take her from me. I have heard about having paperwork that he could sign to give up his rights but I doubt he will sign them, just because he didn't even sign her birth certificate. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was watching Maury and they had the overweight babies on there. So I go to thinking shouldn't they be charged with something because there is no reason why these kids should weight this much. There was a four year old that weighed 120 pounds. I am a mother of 2, my son is almost a year and barely weighs 20 pounds. I feed him whatever he wants and I give him all the things he needs but yet he isn't overweight? Its all about portions. They were giving their kids like 4 chicken wings and waffles and candy for breakfast. In my opinion they're hurting their kids by overfeeding them mostly junk. What do you think?
