In the US as we all know the quality of education is going down hill fast. I’m constantly wondering which is worse--having a bad quality of education or being unsocial. I was very fortunate to get great education overseas as a part of the DoDDS school system but I did take one semester of HS in the states. I was thoroughly disappointed in the quality of teaching--if you’d even call it that! I’m wondering now if it’s better to home school past elementary or have them in school.

What do you think?

Is there a possibility that home-schooled children can still be social? I think so but it would have to be monitored.

What is your stance on home vs. public schools?

I have step children that don't live with us, so I am out of touch with what is IN and cool... And I want to get them some things that they will have fun with and not get board with after 2 seconds. I will get them clothes but that is boring. I want to get them things they will like and enjoy. Stocking stuffer ideas too please!

I am trying to teach my 7 month old son to sleep through the night. He usually goes down without a fuss, but he always wakes between 2-3a.m. Is he just waking out of habit because he has done this for 7 months? How do I break this habit. At what time and how much do you feed your 7 month old to ensure he is completely full at night?

My daughter keeps stealing my Marlboro's from my closet and my car. She is even taking half smoked cigarettes out of her fathers ashtray and lighting them up again! She stole my son's birthday present (a carton of untralights) from his room and smoked them all in her room for 3 days without anybody telling me. I told her that she needs to pay for her own cigarettes now as she has a job. I told her that I would supply up to 2 packs per day at no cost, but that doesn't seem to be cutting it. I have to lock up my cartons now and I can't leave packs anywhere. She grabs one when she sees it. What should I do???

Supose you are the dad. The 16 year old son comes to you with the report card and tells you he modified some grades and feels really guilty now so he wanted to confess. The report card as it was in original was bad. Would you punish the kid only for the bad report and how? Would you punish the kid for the bad report and for changing the grades with the intention to lie to you and how? Would you give some credit for confesing the truth , if yes in what way?
(Im the kid tourmented by guilt feelings and wanting to confess )

You know the kids I mean....the ones who are pierced...who drink... smoke...and have no rules at all? Would you allow your teen to hang out with kids like this? Or go to their house? I'm pretty strict...It makes my job even harder when my kids see other teens and parents like that...to compare me to! Any other strict parents have this problem??

And then act surprised (or refuse to take responsibility) when that kid grows up to be a so-called adult with no experience in dealing with the real world (dealing with consequences, disappointment, realizing that the world DOESN'T revolve around them, etc.)

what is the best way to do this? I tought myself but I don't want it to be the same for her. She thinks she has it all figured out, and seems to learn by making mistakes, but a mistake while driving could kill her or someone else.

Do you think most parents only parent when it's convenient or necessary?

What I mean is when parents only say "no" when they have time. Only play when they have time. Only potty train when they find it convenient. Only discipline when it's gotten to a point of no return.

In other words they are not consistent because they only discipline, play, or pay attention when it's convenient t to them.

I hope this makes sense! I've just noticed lately that a lot of parents I know do this. How do you think it effects a child?

I'm not talking about severe beat downs just normal beatings for disciplinary reasons.

I am the mother of a 17, 15 , 13 , and 10 year olds. They never clean anything up after themselves! They cook and leave the mess, which includes stupid things like egg shells in the sink let alone the dishes. They leave the living room in a constant state of a mess. They have their friends over all the time and feed them our food which we cannot afford. They think it is the end of the world if they don't get to run around on the weekends with their freinds. They don't even clean their room untill their dad is totally pissed after telling them forever. Then they don't get why we are so mad. I feel like I'm forever stressed with all of this. Just about all I do is clean around here and do laundry and cook meals. I feel bad just for getting on here for a bit to relax alittle. Just got through arguing with them about helping to clean. I have to finish cleaning and go to work in 2 1/2 hours and make supper before I go. Am I alone in this situation?

Quite often I see the whole family out shopping, especially in the supermarket. You can tell when Dad doesn't want to be there but the vacant look on his face, the kids are playing up, mum is stressed. I go on my own, leave kids with Dad and he helps bring in the shopping when I get back. It is a joy for me as I don't have anyone with me who doesn't need to be!!
