Don't you think idiots that call 911 over little things ( like this lady http://www.snopes.com/crime/cops/burger.asp) should stop because its endangering other people? I mean... someone could be getting murdered, but they can't get help because all the lines are filled with callers complaining about little things!

I am imagining an alternative legal system, which functions more like the civil courts than the criminal ones. The main difference is that charges msut be pressed by an -individual citizen-, and not by the legal system in general or any group of people. This means that each crime woudl have to have exactly one person who claims to the court that the act in question harmed them in some way. An interested party may act as a proxy when the direct victim can not speak for themselves, but would reasonably want chares pressed, such as murder. There would be three verdicts, guilty, not guilty, and undeterminable. Guilty is straightforward. Undeterminable means that innocence or guilt can not be proven either way, so no action is taken until such time as further evidence is found. Not guilty means the charges were found to be false and baseless, so the accuser is open to libel and slander charges.

There are two main functional differences to my system.

Ok I live in Richmond Va, and I have court on November 30th. I am the victim. I would like to know if anyone knows a way to drop charges quickly? The charges against the suspect are simple assault and attempted abduction. I am now just a witness for the state who is actually pressing the charges, I just have to show up and admit to what happened that night. However this person doesnt deserve this charge and I want to drop it. This situation has gotten way out of control and shouldn't have gone this far. Can I call the prosecutor to drop them? If I don't show up to court can I drop them that way ? Please help !!!

Hi there: I'm sued in L.A. for a credit card debt ($2,200) as I live in Puerto Rico. The judge, after an OSC hearing that apparently turned well for the plaintiff, scheduled a "Case Management Conference". What is that? Is that another procedural step or the case main hearing where the judge will hear the merits of the case? Thank you+++

In the state of California, can previous convictions be disclosed to the jury, during the course of a trial?

I can see the argument of relevance of previous convictions againts prejudicing the jury's decision, but just want to know if they can be used.

Specifically, I am thinking of a case of felony assault, where the accused was convicted of a similar felony six years ago, which was, consequently, reduced to a misdemeanor.

Recently Halifax, Nova Scotia(Canada) a by-law was just passed that makes smoking in your vehicle with children illegal.
Now although myself I smoke but would never smoke in a vehicle with a child, I believe this is a violation civil rights.

Before Anti-Smokers jump down my throat, I don't agree with smoking in a house of vehicle with young children in it but I do believe that should be the choice of the parent.

I would be interested to hear other opinions on it and if you think its a human rights violation.

Surely there has to be something that can be done to these sick and pathetic people.

What kind of an adult poses as a child? There should be a law, period, about this. Surely the case can be made the Drews attempted something nefarious for this child.

Will this child have no justice? The adult neighbors that did this should be thrown in jail. This is absurd to mess with a disturbed child like this.

The news story said the boys were charged with rape, even though no force was used. The girl can't legally agree to a sex act, so they had no choice but charge the boys with rape. My question is what should they do with these boys if found guilty?
