Polygamist Leader Gets 5 Years to Life
By JENNIFER DOBNER,AP
Posted: 2007-11-20 17:14:52
ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) - A judge on Tuesday sentenced a polygamous-sect leader to five years to life in prison for his role in the arranged marriage of teenage cousins.

Warren Jeffs, 51, was convicted of rape as an accomplice for his role in the marriage of a 14-year-old follower and her 19-year-old cousin in 2001. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

It will be up to the Utah parole board to decide just how long he stays behind bars.

Jeffs is head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, whose members practice polygamy in arranged marriages that have often involved placing young girls with older men. Most FLDS members live in the twin communities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz., about 350 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

Washington County prosecutors said Jeffs enticed Elissa Wall into marriage and sex against her will by telling her the relationship was commanded by God and that any refusal would place her salvation at risk.

Jurors said Wall's age was a major factor in their decision. Under Utah law, a 14-year-old can consent to sex in some circumstances. But it is not considered consensual if a person under 18 is enticed by someone at least three years older.

I'm a single parent and have 2 children living with me who do not have a relationship with they're mother. I do not have anyone to list as a primary care plan in the event I deploy. My unit is considering chaptering me out because of this. My retirement package has already been approved and I am due to retire in 9 months. Can I still retire and collect my retirement pay as well as receive an honorable discharge?

I'm just wondering because it seems like they should be aware of the laws.
Example:
I read this article about this teenager who was living like a normal 'american' teenager, going to concerts and stuff. Her father was in Pakistan and did not approve of her lifestyle, so he murdered her. This act could have been validated in Pakistan but not in the US.

I was also watching cops and this guy from Mexico beat up his wife because she wasn't keeping their house clean. He told the cops that keeping the house dirty was unacceptable in Mexico.
So do they know that laws here before they become citizens? I think they should not only have to know them, but also sign a copy of them.

You know like that guy who was sleeping on his couch a few months ago and some sick police came in and tasered him. Well if I was that guy I probably would have defended myself and killed them. What would be the legal consequences? I ask this seriously because I am prepared to defend myself if some stupid cops came into my home. Here was the story:

In Florida, a predator kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered a girl. John Couey deliberately committed the act against a 9 year old girl, Jessica Lunsford. It was very difficult but the prosecutors got a conviction and a death sentence for this low-life white trash animal.

The ACLU and other liberal groups oppose the punishment and will continue to attempt to commute Couey's death sentence. It will take years and a small fortune to get justice. The people who oppose Couey's fitting punishment are reprehensible.

All liberals are not against the death penalty but every advocate against capital punishment is a liberal, including an overwhelming % of criminal defense lawyers

If Couey had killed, murdered, raped and tortured your child wouldn't you cross the line to punish Couey, if you could?

What would you say to the liberal group like the ACLU who wants Couey given a pass?

Why do liberals support the ACLU? Is partnership in socialism worth it?

Why would we not do stem cell research when there are 2.1 million abortions per year? I mean seriously, you know how many lives we could possibly save! Ridiculous!

Don't take me the wrong way I do think it's wrong if we are intentionally killing embryos to get the stem cells. But if there are 2.1 million abortions per year, than why would we not use those stem cells for the research?

Oh yes, 2.1 million are only the REPORTED cases. Who knows how many unreported abortions there are.

I loaned someone money over a period of time to help them out. They said after they got their situation straight I would receive my money but it's been a year now. When I ask for my money all I get is excuses but how he's still stuggling doesn't have it right now. The problem is that now I am struggling and I really need my money back. I have decided to write a letter to the person and explaining if I don't receive my money by a certain period then I would take him to court. I also know he will respond by phone to my letter so I plan to record it and use it in court. However I'm am concerned that he might be like do what u gotta do. The problem is that I can't find the paper with the amounts (and time) that I loaned him though I do know the total sum. Also I don't have a promissory note like I know I should have gotten. Im just worried I won't get my money back if I go to court then I'm out more money I don't have for court fee's. Bottom line what are my options what steps should Itake

I've been reading all the other answers to how bail bonds work and they are confusing they all mention something about a criminal. I owe 4,000 in traffic tickets and I was wanting to look into getting a bail bondsman to avoid me from going to jail. I know you have to put a 10% downpayment but then what? Do I have to pay the 4,000 in full or can I get a plan, that is my question.

I have a "neighborhood drunk" and he is srating to harrass us.

What can be done about this? We are getting rather sick of all of the verbal abuse and yelling.

I don't think the guy works and it seems like he just walks around the neighborhood all day long. He is ALWAYS drunk off his azz and harrassing people.

I have some questions about the juvenile criminal system in Pennsylvania. Crime commited was stealing...
a) How can probation be extended?
b) Can probation officers go into records of the offender’s friends even though the friends have never before committed a criminal act?
c) If the juvenile turns 18 in the middle of his or her probation is anything different from the original juvenile law system (does it revert to an adult law system)?
d) If a judge says it is unnecessary for photograph and fingerprints to be taken but the delinquent officer say it is necessary can you fight it?
e) Are delinquent officers allowed to get in contact with friends of the offender even if not given permission by the offender?
f) Does having a juvenile record affect the schools you may have the chance to get into?
g) If you have a problem with your delinquent officer who or how can you report this? (Already she is giving unfair statements and has crossed the boundary on some things)
Thanks

I need some advice please.
I am a mum to 6 children and have had some problems with my father and hus partner with the children. I accept that my children should not be left alone with either of them but my mother in law is threatening me that if my children go near my dad she is calling social services. My dad is not that bad and ebcause she does not like him she is blowing everything out of proportion.
I am so so upset that she is threatening me and my husband (her son) and would like some advice on how to shut her up legally.
She is a control freak and likes to control evrything and I cant cope with her anymore.
I appreciate she worries about the children, but I cannot understand why she is threatening me with social services over a small problem.

Is anyone else getting emails from africans (mainly west africa based) about them offering masses of money. Im tired of these scams and wondering if anyone is doing something about it. The latest i got is about some woman who is terminally ill with breast cancer offering me a cut of $150 million dollars - i feel that is horrendously offensive and is just giving places like nigeria even more of a bad reputation.
