Actually one state isn't required to recognize a marriage as legal if you were married in another state. Marriage laws have always been state specific. Check on the laws for the state you live in and consider checking with an attorney just to make sure you will not have any problems.

As long as the place where you get married recognizes it, the US is obligated to recognize it. Unless, of course, the marriage would violate US law. For instance, if you engage in polygamy, that is illegal in every state. If the foreign jurisdiction marries same-sex persons, then that would be illegal in a lot of states. Otherwise, if it's OK in Tahiti, the US will recognize it. Make sure you keep your marriage certificate/license.

** Note: This is a general discussion of the subject matter of your question and not legal advice. Local laws or your particular situation may change the general rules. For a specific answer to your question you should consult legal counsel with whom you can discuss all the facts of your case. **

The general rule is that if the marriage is legal under the laws of the location where you marry, then it is legally recognized in the U.S. So, make sure you are complying with the local regulations.

Follow the law of the country where you marry.

If you get legally married in another country, the US will automatically recognize the marriage, as long as it's not illegal under US law. (If you get married at 10, say, in Saudi Arabia and then come to the US then your marriage will not be recognized here.)
