Fish - November 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

In my aquarium are two gouramis (as well as a senegalus and a pleco but these fish both live in blissful ignorance of other fish). As often happens with a gourami pair, one has established itself as the dominant fish and the other is submissive (though he is often bold and uppity). They are both males.

I was wondering if adding a third gourami will help ease the aggression of the dominant fish, or if it would make things worse for the submissive fish.

(Overcrowding is not an issue here, it's a 20 gallon tank but I am soon upgrading to a 55 in a month or two. Just wondering about the behavior of the fish.)

Not my whole hand but tore a hell of a lotta flesh from it.
I got like 5 piranhas and all of them are like 1.5 feet and above in length .
I wanna know if there will be any poisonous reactions caused due to this incident(because they are pretty BIG now)????

PS - If you are curious to know how my hand got eaten, ill tell you.
When I was feeding them their daily meal of 50+ guppies i accidentally put one of my hand a little too close to the water and BOOM !!!!!

He looks kinda like a nudibranch but has a sort of hard plate on his back, it probably taks up about 1/3rd of his body. It is definately not a snail! Hes kinda grey on the body and the shell/ plate bit is sorta purpley coloured, but I think he can change colour. Hes about 1" long.

I cant figure out how to put in a picture otherwise I would!

My 2 filter powerheads are creating 1/2" waves that surf from the left side of the tank to the right..

1/2" is the amplitude. meaning from water surface to the peek of the wave..

Is this bad or good????

I have noticed in the last 3-4 days that aquarium heater temperature is not matching with the thermometer. could this be due to our cold weather. heating does run in the building when its cold for us humans. I notice the orange light is on but the temperature in 3-5 degrees lower then it should be. It does seem similar to room temperature at times. And as the heater light is on it just seems its trying to heat up. but water does feel colder then normal - also i dont seem to feel that the heater is hot (i should be able to feel this on touch) or does this get only slightly hot. uvlight is also present.

They look like small salt grains. They are attached to the Media inside my tank(ex. powerhead). They are very small.
At first i thought it was live sand but then i tried manually removing it but it wouldn't come out. They are very small tough salt looking grains..

If you know what they are:
Are they harmful in anyway???

I saw this fish once that was black and kind of long, but it wasn't a loach I was told my the guy in the tropical fish store that it was called a budhacodfree...the scales were defined and the fish almost looked like it was leather in a way...hard to discribe..does anyone know what fish this might be..it was in a tank by itself so it was probably aggressive and it was probably about 12in long and it had a fairly wide body.........

Hi, I have a 100 gallon tank with 3 gold severums, and 2 blood parrots. The blood parrots have lost interest in the food that i have been giving them and they seem to have whitish stuff growing around their gills and on their body. Mainly gills though. Can you tell me what disease this is? It doesn't seem like ick.

I have a baby green spotter puffer in a 20G. I was wondering what type of substrate to use. Right now, I have nothing. I don't know if regular aquarium gravel is too small (the puffer ingesting it on accident while hunting). Is aquarium sand all right? Or should I stick with something bigger like river gavel?

Ok, i have a platy in my tank with a bloated belly. I'm not sure if it's pregnant or if this is early stages of dropsy. How can i tell the difference. I know that later stages of dropsy see the scales standing up and the fish's eyes big and bulgy. There are afew that have died though recently and i'm not exactly sure what the problem is.. i dont want the little babies to be born in an infected tank (assuming it is pregnant and assuming she or the other fish arn't gonna eat all of the young).
Soo?? what do you guys think?

I have a 75 Gallon FOWLR take with approx. 110 lbs of Live rock in the tank now. I rearranged the rock a bit ago and think I can possibly add another 50 lbs but don't want to over do it. So is there such a thing as too much live rock or would that do more good than harm. Any suggestions. Like I said it's 75 gallon now but looking to upgrade soon to I hope around a 200 gallon but would love to get the rock now so would it be too much for my tank or will I be ok. Thanks

I had a tank with several bala sharks, catfish, kissing Gouriami. One bala shark had a white cloud like thing over one eye. Then there were white patches on skin (I don't think its ich because they are not small salt-like grains). Also, where the fins connect to the body it is red. 5 bala sharks have died and the 2 catfish are about too. I have done a water change, added salt, and Melafix. The catfish's whiskers are also falling off. On one of the bala sharks and now one of the catfish, it looks like the front part of their nose is deteriorating. Also, on the bala sharks, it looked like there was a whitish-clear film over the gills and the gills were mostly covered in it. Please help, as they do not seem to be getting better. I am looking for possible causes, treatments, and a diagnosis. So far I have thought it might be ich, bacteria, etc. Nothing seems to fit!

Hey, got a question in need of an answer..

Tank Info:
I currently have a 29 gallon community tank. Tank has lots of hiding places, caves, driftwood and some plants (will add more plants in the future)
w/
2 large sailfin mollies
3 cherry barbs
1 corydora (plan to get 1-2 more)
1 clown pleco

Now for my next group of fish i am wondering on who to get...

I was thinking maybe some swordtails but then again want something more "special" and this is where the dwarf cichlids come in. Would rams (bolivian/blue) or kribs be okay in tank with the other fish? (better yet will the other fish be okay with the ram/krib in it)
I recently had some young albino paradise fish and they were just crazy, being greedy with the food, chasing each other and the molly so i decided to give them back. Would the ram/krib be as "aggressive" as the paradise fish?

I have a 25 gallon coldwater tank with 10 white cloud mountain minnows and 2 hillstream / butterfly loaches.(they are fed algae wafers so algae on tank is not an issue) The temps are for wcmm 19 to 24 and hillstreams 19 to 24 but the temp in my tank is a steady 21 to 23 always. It has wood in it for the loaches, a plant thats edible and a air pump. it also has overfiltration by a long way (a 35 to 40gal tank filter and a 10 gal tank small filter).

ok so finally heres the question-
I would like another loner fish to put in to vary it, however it must be ok at the temps and fine with the fish i have. please advise me another type of fish (just one or if its ok 2) that i could put in, preferabley not small like a wcmm.
thanks alot, nick
