He looks kinda like a nudibranch but has a sort of hard plate on his back, it probably taks up about 1/3rd of his body. It is definately not a snail! Hes kinda grey on the body and the shell/ plate bit is sorta purpley coloured, but I think he can change colour. Hes about 1" long.

I cant figure out how to put in a picture otherwise I would!

This might be a type of limpet or a relative. They're related to snails and nudibranchs, but the shell is more like a cone. There's a lot of variety amoung the group, and ones I've had in my tank have the shell covering the entire body (there are freshwater ones like this as well). I'll see if I can find a photo of some to post here.

Yes it sounds like a stomatella to me. They are great little invertabretes.
