In fin rot, the fins would actually be disintegrating by breaking off into small pieces or the fins would look eaten away. So unless this is what you're seeing, it's not fin rot.

Some fish just have black-tipped fins: http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/321.htm

If yours didn't have them when you first got it, it may be a sign of too much ammonia in the tank. Ammonia is produced in the wastes of your fish, and if your tank is more than a few weeks old, you should have bacteria that are converting the ammonia to other compounds. But if this is a newer tank, the ammonia can build up to toxic levels. If you don't do regular water changes of 25% of the tank volume per week, you might want to do one soon!

The black can occur from other chemical irritants as well, so you might want to consider what you use in the tank (medications) and make sure you aren't overdosing your fish.

See "black patches" in this link: http://www.fish-disease.net/diseases.htm (also has info for fin rot)

ADDITION: If the fish is getting ammonia burn, the others may get it as well - they're all in the same water, so they're all exposed to it. Seems a few water changes might be in order, but it can take as long as 2 weeks for the color to disappear.

ummm i had a fish like this but It was a feeder left over in a tank that I never cleaned. When a fish's fins are damaged all kinds of diseases can occur. What kind of fish is it? If it is under $10 to replace flush it and move on. It's not worth losing a tank over. Do you ever siphon your tank? If you want to kepp the fish i would run to walmart now and buy one.

hope i helped.

please tell me what kind of fish it is. I can help you if you give me this piece of info.

ADDITION: Most likely it is an ammonia burn. If this is a goldfish, then this is likely the case. If it is an ammonia burn, then do frequent water changes and it will slowly heal. The signs that it is healing would be that the affected part will turn a caramel color then eventually the patch will look normal again.
