Is the film actually white, or is is more "cloudy" with an iridescent shine (like oil). This sounds like a film of protein from either your conditioner (but in this case it would be in all your tanks) or from your fish food. When proteins from the food break down, they create a thin film of the dissolved amino acids and bacteria (which is what makes the shine). I get this on a tank of large catfish, which probaly have similar eating habits to your cichlids. It's the only tank where I had this happen as well. I finally solved the problem using a surface skimmer, which attaches to the filter: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/215642/product.web This pulls water from the top of the tank where the intakes of hang-on-tank and canisters don't reach well.

It could be from a water conditioner or uneaten food. Sometimes, if the water qualtiy isn't in tip top shape this can happen.

Try skimming it off. If it doesn't work or comes back overnight, do more frequent water changes.

Maybe its a byproduct of those fish...I know nothing of them, but if you have several tanks all using the same water and filtration systems, then i'd guess the fish

good luck! ;)
