Ok, i have a platy in my tank with a bloated belly. I'm not sure if it's pregnant or if this is early stages of dropsy. How can i tell the difference. I know that later stages of dropsy see the scales standing up and the fish's eyes big and bulgy. There are afew that have died though recently and i'm not exactly sure what the problem is.. i dont want the little babies to be born in an infected tank (assuming it is pregnant and assuming she or the other fish arn't gonna eat all of the young).
Soo?? what do you guys think?

One way you might be able to tell is if the fish is still eating well. Fish with dropsy usually don't have any desire to eat.

Also, if your fish is a lighter color, you should be able to see the gravid spot (dark patch where there's thin skin on the back of the abdoment that lets you see the fry though the female's skin: (shown here with a guppy)http://www11.brinkster.com/sonthuan/images/FemaleGuppy.jpg

Koi are egg layers they don't get pregnant. at the same time as a fish has dropsy they are sickly. A koi received't breed in a small tank. they choose a minimum of 500 gallons and favor to be about 5 years previous.
