I have a 75 Gallon FOWLR take with approx. 110 lbs of Live rock in the tank now. I rearranged the rock a bit ago and think I can possibly add another 50 lbs but don't want to over do it. So is there such a thing as too much live rock or would that do more good than harm. Any suggestions. Like I said it's 75 gallon now but looking to upgrade soon to I hope around a 200 gallon but would love to get the rock now so would it be too much for my tank or will I be ok. Thanks

Yes and no. It's great from the perspective of biological filtration, hiding places for fish and inverts, and creating a natural-looking setting.

But you do have to keep in mind that the more rock you have, the harder it becomes to maintain enough good water circulation to keep "dead areas" from forming and debris from accumulating. It also becomes more difficult to catch any fish that need medical treatment, or to remove "bully" fish or unwanted hitch-hikers (mantis shrimp).

And with each addition of live rock, you're decreasing the water volume in the tank - this can become a problem as far as dilution of wastes, or calculation of medication doses.

Generally 1-2 lbs of live rock per gallon is the recommended amount for marine tanks, so it sounds as if you still have a little room, but think about what I've mentioned before you go overboard!

As long as the new rock doesn't take up necessary space for your marine species to thrive or disrupt the necessary currents that certain species need , then go ahead and get the rock. 35yr marine fish exp
