My fishes are starting to gasp for air on the surface. i read somewhere that high pH causes this and that ammonia is really toxic when pH is high. i recently also seen that none of my goldfishes have erect dorsal fin, drooping to the side. i have been changing the water about 20% frequently. Is there any natural stuff to lower the pH or the ammonia? i read somewhere that by adding soda water or vinegar lowers the pH. Will this kill or affect the fish?
thanx for all replies

Is there any sort of thermometer or something I can do to keep my fish from breaking the tank thermometer?

This is my fourth thermometer, the ones from Wal Mart, and it does well enough but I have a 5" albino oscar that loves to run into it and make it snap against the glass, or throw things at it.
I thought that maybe the thermometers were just old, but it started getting to be a hassle replacing them.

A few days ago, I saw Pico throwing rocks and running into it until the thermometer broke again, in similar condition as the others.

Is there anything I can do?

I have two albino cory catfish, one male molly and two female mollies in a ten-gallon tank. I am not sure when to expect possible breeding, but the one dalmatian molly (the other mollies are both white) seems to be getting bigger. Is there not enough space for them to breed?
Earlier I tried putting both of the females in a clear breeding tank in the same general aquarium and they did not seem to like it.
Should I try breeding the mollies or should I return them and buy guppies?

Ok I have a 55 gal tank with chiclids. I have had fish for 3 years so I'm sorta experienced with them. Recently I transfered into a 55 gal tank and slowly added more fish. My tank is equiped with two filers a 50 gal filter marine bio and a 75 gal filter marine bio. I clean the tank reguarly and perform water changes about once every 2 weeks or so. Ive never had problems before but within the last week the tank has become completely foggy and the nitrate levels are very unsafe at this point. I did a water change added some stuff and still no luck what should I do? Please help one of my chiclids is about to die =(

we have had our tank for 10 weeks now and have approx 30 fish which have been introduced gradually. The tank holds 250 litres of water. We have tested for ammonia/ph/nitrate and everything has been fine, this week we tested for nitrite and had a reading of 2, we have done two 25% waterchanges and the reading has not altered, the fish seem fine and the other tests are negative, do we have a problem?

My fish always seems so bored in it's tank. Sometimes it gets so bored that it starts destroying the plants we have in there with it. Also, sometimes it seems to be playing with the air bubbles and the ammonia sign we have stuck on the wall.

Are there any toys for fish? Just something to play with so that living in a tank isn't so monotonous?

I have several livebearing fish. Mollies and platies. All my female platies (1 gold twin barred, 1 sunburst, 1 sunburst wag) are really fat. They must be pregnant. How long are they prego for? It's been close to a month now... My black molly and cremecicle molly are also pregnant, I believe. I keep hoping to see little babies but none yet. I know some of them have had babies before because we have a young twin barred platy who's almost full grown now.

And if anyone can tell the difference between a male and female rainbow fish, I'd love to know! I have 2 they look exactly alike...

I work at home doing transcription and my fish tank is in my office and my filter is really loud and the speakers on my transcription file are very quiet, and I can hardly hear them with the filter on, so I turned it off. Will my fish be okay for a couple of hours without the filter? I don't have anything to create air bubbles or anything, it's just sitting water, not moving. Will my fish be okay? It might help to mention that my fish is a small mouth bass that we got from the river. Thank you!

I had started with a 33 gal tank and had that for 2-3 months, then decided to upgrade to a 55 gal tank. I transfered all of the water from the 33 to the 55 gal, then filled the rest with water. Almost everyone has died since "the move".

I now have about 40 lbs of live rock, 5 hermit crabs, 1 carmel shrimp, snails, 4 damsels, a lemon peeel and a blue tang.

I am hoping to aventually turn this into a coral reef/fish tank (but that is for later)

Anyways, my Tang doesn't seem so happy, he seems to be rubbing against the rock.

any advice??

I have 2 goldfish in my 10 gallon right now. (Please don't lecture me about it. I already know, they grow big and raise ammonia, and yes, i check my water. the pH and the ammonia is at a good level.)
Next time I want something more interesting, like a Betta/Neon Tetra/Oto combination, or a Guppy/Oto combination,
would these work well, and could i get the numbers that could go into a 10 gallon?
Thanks for alll your help.
The people in the fish section are great. =)

ok i made a breeding net, one made of hot glue sticks, glued together by hot glue, and surrounded by nylon. I would like to know if this would be hazardous to my clownfish? I am going to store live brine shrimp in it and my regular breeder nets holes are 2 big the shrimp can fit right through.
Thanks

I have a four inch plecostomus that I feed algae wafers. All of my other fish seem to like these, but all of my other fish are carnivorous and are fed flakes. I am concerned that I may overfeed my other fish and underfeed my pleco. What is a food that mollies and guppies will not eat and that my pleco will love? Also, how do I feed him this food and how often?

My neighbor was going to kill his sea anemone because the pet store didn't want it back. I just thought i was inhumane. Well i got it and put it in my tank. I need information on this specific type of anemone. Is it safe for my semi-reef tank overall? safe for my blue tang, cleaner shrimp, blue damsel and sea star (6')? Would if affect the water chemistry?

Okay, i know people are going to say that i cant have any other fish in a 10 gallon tank with my beta. but i know from experience that i can have some. i was looking for some unique and different fishes and came across a Black Ghost Knife fish. they are cool looking but i was wondering if i can put one in with my beta. i doubt it, that i can. but i still would like to ask. and the same thing goes for any bala sharks. i'd like to put some in there but i doubt i can. any links or info you can provide for a good exotic tank mate for him would be appreciated.
