Is there any sort of thermometer or something I can do to keep my fish from breaking the tank thermometer?
This is my fourth thermometer, the ones from Wal Mart, and it does well enough but I have a 5" albino oscar that loves to run into it and make it snap against the glass, or throw things at it.
I thought that maybe the thermometers were just old, but it started getting to be a hassle replacing them.
A few days ago, I saw Pico throwing rocks and running into it until the thermometer broke again, in similar condition as the others.
Is there anything I can do?

Try getting a Visitherm Stealth thermometer. These are encased in aluminum, so it should be harder for your fish to break it: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/11432/product.web (good for turtle tanks, too!)
EDIT: the guard may be cheaper, but it doesn't enclose the entire heater - there's a section in the middle of the heater (where the on/off light and temperature setting are located) that's not protected so the aquarist can see them - if the oscar runs into these areas, the heater could still break

I had the same problem when I bred my oscars and my large arrowana broke a few thermometers until I thought of an idea and it worked. Stick with a regular thermometer with a suction cup. Now add an extra suction cup at the bottom so that when your oscar hits the thermometer it has no place to move and its secure. The extra suction cup acts as a padding so the thermometer doesn't hit the tank. Try placing the thermomter in the corner of the tank.

The little beads are lead or steel shot to weight the bottom end of the thermometer. It's a good idea to get them out if you can, but they aren't especially dangerous. The red stuff in the thermometer, by the way, is not mercury, it's an alcohol solution with some red dye to make it easier to see. The only real danger from a broken thermometer, either to you or to your fish, is pieces of broken glass that might have sharp edges. Get all the broken glass out of the tank if you can.

You could always get a heater guard, or an external thermometer. Little tip about those, they usually tend to read about 2 degrees low. Keep that in mind if you get one.

Get a plastic container a floating thermometer will fit into, fill with water, place cover on it, and put it in tank.

Here, they made this just for Pico!
EDIT: The unbreakable thermometer is a really nice, fancy idea, but does cost $12 more than the cover and the cover achieves the same goal........no point in spending more money than you need too........
