My fish always seems so bored in it's tank. Sometimes it gets so bored that it starts destroying the plants we have in there with it. Also, sometimes it seems to be playing with the air bubbles and the ammonia sign we have stuck on the wall.

Are there any toys for fish? Just something to play with so that living in a tank isn't so monotonous?

Some may think you’re being facetious, however, some fish will exhibit signs of “boredom”. You didn’t mention the type of fish you have. Based upon the information you gave, I’m going to make a guess that you have a goldfish?

Goldfish can be extremely “playful” and enjoy swimming through bubbles. Some of mine use the bubble stream as an elevator and it’s funny to watch them doing them.

Goldfish are notorious for being very unkind to live plants, which is why many gold fish keepers use artificial plants. I keep live plants in my tank. I plant some plants specifically for my goldies to munch on!!

If your fish is spending lots of time on the bottom of the tank, it could be a sign of illness! Test your water to ensure the ammonia and nitrites are 0ppm. Also, if your water temp is too warm or too cold, your fish will become lethargic and spend time on the bottom of the tank. Tropical fish generally require temps in the 75 – 85 degree range, while goldfish are more active and healthy in temps in the 65 – 75 degree range (68 – 72 is optimal)

Regarding “toys” for fish, your best bet is to ensure your water quality is in check. If you don’t have testing kits, take a sample of your tank’s water to a pet shop that sells fish and they will test it for (generally free of charge)

If your water and temperature is good for your fish, your fish most likely will resume normal activities.

You can always ad interesting items to your tank such as smooth shells, marbles, figurals etc… Ensure any added décor is clean and doesn’t have any sharp or abrasive edges as this can harm your fish.

Good Luck!

Hi Bogeygirl, Despite my best efforts at distraction my Goldfish like nothing better than to eat & uproot my carefully potted plants as well as making an unholy mess with the substrate after they've used it for mouthwash!

As they are very inquisitive you might try a mug on it's side-this is an excellent 'cave' to explore & probably will double as a bedroom too-great for small fish. As they grow you can increase the size of these 'caves'. I currently have a large square glass flower vase on it's side which is extremely popular-when they're not gardening that is.

For some fish, like many types of cichlids, digging up plants is "fun". My fish do it a lot. So, little to your knowledge, your fish might already be having fun :).

Aside from that, do you only have one fish? It might be lonely. Try finding a suitable tank mate.
