Okay, i know people are going to say that i cant have any other fish in a 10 gallon tank with my beta. but i know from experience that i can have some. i was looking for some unique and different fishes and came across a Black Ghost Knife fish. they are cool looking but i was wondering if i can put one in with my beta. i doubt it, that i can. but i still would like to ask. and the same thing goes for any bala sharks. i'd like to put some in there but i doubt i can. any links or info you can provide for a good exotic tank mate for him would be appreciated.

Bettas can pretty much be kept with anything that doesn't resemble a Betta (fish with long fins like Gouramis, Angelfish, Guppies, or Skirted Tetras) and will not eat or attack them. Aggressive fish like Cichlids cannot be kept with Bettas as they will soon tear them apart. Black Ghost Knifes get about 14 inches, so it isn't an option in your tank. Bala Sharks also get large (10+ inches) and are VERY active and can be nippy as well. So, no Balas or BGKs, but if you want something interesting, how about Kuhli Loaches (a group of 4 would be good) and a nice school of Rasboras? They are both peaceful and interesting fish to watch that differ from your everyday Tetras and Cories. Email me if you have any questions.

EDIT: Also avoid hyper fish like Danios because they are constantly bothering the Betta with their activity and nipping (even if you can't see it).

I think a black ghost knife would be a little too big for your fish tank. You are right, I have kept a betta in with my other fish for a while. It doesn't mean a fish is a fighter it doesn't mean it can't be a lover. For bala sharks, your tank would also be small for sharks. You should try and get a bigger tank if you really want those fish. You should try and establish a betta community tank with tetras and some species of barbs and some livebearers. I think cichlids, rainbowfish and loaches might be a little too big for that tank.

I deal a lot with bettas so I think I can help you out some. Unfortunately, you will have to stick with freshwater fish that can be kept in a 10-gallon also. www.http://www.liveaquaria.com have a wonderful selection of fish that can be kept in a 10-gallon providing you with information about the species that they have available, their pH and temperature levels required and other types of information to help you out.

You can keep up to 12 fish in a 10-gallon tank.

When dealing with bettas, it would be best that you add a small school of fish (up to 6 or 8). Add the school fish first then add the betta after a week. This will keep the male betta from becoming territorial in the tank. If you add the betta first, chances are it will eventually end up attacking the other fish because it will feel threatened by them.

Secondly, don't add fish that have flashy fins like guppies.

Some fish that go along with Bettas are...White Cloud Minnows, tetras, and other peaceful small schooling fish that are fast. Fish that stay on the bottom like cory cats etc, mollies also do well with bettas. DO not put a dwarf Gourami in it lol...bad experience with it

Those fish that suck to the side of the tank and eat algae work well, and so do smaller fish that are fast and non-aggressive like the neon ones that glow in the dark.
