i need to do a science fair project for school, the one i chose involves experimentation on crustacean like animals, Daphnia. Help! I've looked online and it mostly says at tropical fish stores, i don't really know where those are and I've already tried Petco. Any ideas? please i need help.

The daphnia you'd get at fish stores is either freeze-dried or frozen (it's used for food and processed so it won't have any parasites or diseases that can be passed on to the fish that eat them).

You can find lots of small crustaceans at the bottom or in plants in local ponds (and these are free). Just be sure to ask before you collect if the ponds are on private property. All you'd need to do is to collect some pond water (and just a little sediment from the bottom) and put in a few aquatic plants. If there are lakes where people fish, there may already be plants that were snagged by fishing hooks that are in the water floating near the shore.

This link can help you identify what you collect (and if you click on any of the virtual organisms in the jar, you'll get a new link for just that type): http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/index.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/ponddip/cyclops.html

Go to Yahoo yellow pages and look up Tropical Fish store, or Pet stores, and call around.
