I have several livebearing fish. Mollies and platies. All my female platies (1 gold twin barred, 1 sunburst, 1 sunburst wag) are really fat. They must be pregnant. How long are they prego for? It's been close to a month now... My black molly and cremecicle molly are also pregnant, I believe. I keep hoping to see little babies but none yet. I know some of them have had babies before because we have a young twin barred platy who's almost full grown now.

And if anyone can tell the difference between a male and female rainbow fish, I'd love to know! I have 2 they look exactly alike...

Generally, it's 28 days for them to produce their fry, but if the females are stressed, they can hold onto the fry for longer. That's why I prefer to put lots of plants in the tank (for a place for the females to hide and give birth rather than moving them to a breeder net). With the plants, the fry have good hiding places from the adults and most are able to survive. The plants also encourage the growth of microorganisms that the fry can feed on.

For rainbowfish, females are generally less colorful than the males. You may have two of the same gender, or a male that's satisfied being the only male in the tank. This is one species where it pay to keep more males than females, since the bright coloration is shown by the males when competing for females - so the more males you have, the better the display they put on (as long as you have some females in the tank). The rainbows would also like having the plants as a spawning area.

The only fish that get pregnant are live beares. They are pregnant for about 1 month.

Hmmmm. Hard to get those little fish to pee on a stick to confirm that they are actually pregnant.

Gestation varies with species, but as I recall between a month and two months for the species you list.

The coolest part about these fish is that the female can store sperm inside her for up to a year, and then get pregnant with saved sperm. Neat, eh?
