Fish - September 2007

I just got a new tank and tried to cycle it with a goldfish, but it died within a couple days. I'm going to go back to the store to get another fish, I hear danios are really hardy fish and are good to cycle with. However, I already bought "Total Goldfish" gourmet flake blend. Will I be able to feed this to a danio?

I've been told all fish are male, but sometimes they get pregnant. How much, if any, of that is correct?

My folks have an aqurium shaped like a gold fish bowl(ya know the round ones). My male betta fish passed away from ick(yes it's a real diease) 4 years ago and I'd like to get another one, but one thing though. The instructions for the aqurium on the box said to have only one fish in it and then add on about a month later(I'm not sure though).

Anyway here's the question...what kind of fish are ok to put in an aquirum with bettas?

I remember seeing betta in a tank with some red fish(they were small and has a blue streak on their sides, I think they're called tetras) this was at petco, I've also seen a fish bowl with 2 bettas in it at a petco. I guess they were male and female.

I have an extra 10 gallon aquarium and I want some ideas on what top put in it? I don't know fi I want a bunch a small schooling fish, all that I know is that I want a very active fish again SW or FW, I have a 20 gallon (SW) thats complete as in I can not add more fish without it becoming overcrowed. I would be fine with even one or two larger fish as long as they are atractive, active just plain cool to look at. An ideas would be great, I have a filter, heater, etc... (everything to run an aquarium). Thanks
~Kyle
P.S. I am willing to think out of the box rodents, reptiles, amphibians, etc...

Well I research the RES and found that they need a basking platform in tank with temperatures or 90 degrees. I would like to buy a fully aquatic turtle that does not exceed 5-6 inches, that is somewhat cheap (less that $50), and could be kept with a large oscar in a 75 gallon tank. Is there even any species that fit these requirements?? Thanks!

I would like both these fish for my aquarium but many sites don't give clear descriptions on how much they need. It says the loach needs 10 gallons and says it likes to me in schools of 3+ but doesn't say anything about 10 gallons per fish or per school or anything like that.

1) What would be a good combination of the these fish in a 20 gallon?

2) To start the nitrogen cycle, would you recommend adding the packets they sell at fish stores?

3) Is it advisable for a beginner like me to keep a Java Fern in this tank?

4) What kind of gravel would best suite my situation?

I setup a saltwater tank complete with internal 3-in-1 filter systerm, new charcoal, heater (set at 78), live sand, and rainbow rock. I cycled my 45 gal tank for 6 wks w/ 5 damsels. My tank cycled then I got rid of my dams. and put in 3 nice fish (all about 1.5" big each/same size of ea. dams.), a turbo snail & 2 brittle stars. I noticed nitrite went up so I added biozyne to tank as Petco advised. Everything died except 1 brit. star, as every level spiked. I added AmQuel+ but it didn't help so I changed out all water and recycled the tank (started over). All levels have reached, maintained, & tested perfect except my PH. No matter what I cannot get it up. I was given, by a tropical fish store that specializes in sw tanks, a buffer to raise it & have used it daily for 4 days (as directed on bottle) yet no PH change. It still says 7.4... way too low. The buffer is supposed to raise it to 8.3. What am I doing wrong? My tank is cloudy now from the product too. What do I do?

Ok so we got three goldfish on sunday for my little brothers bday present. Sadly, one dies overnight, but the other two are doing well. We found something floating in the bowk that looked like a piece of white straw, but it is most likely eggs. So, I was wondering, is it worth keeping them? How many will hatch and will the pet store take them if we can't find home? And what will need to be done to keep them alive?
