Hi! I believe that my Beta fish has come down with velvet. He has been acting a little more lethargic then usual and has been rubbing himself on the shells I have. I used a flashlight and noticed a little bit of gold speckling on his chest near his gills, which is exactly where he is always scratching himself (I am thinking I caught it relatively early on)

I live in student housing and so my mom bought me some of those General Cure tablets for things such as Velvet, Hole-in-the-head etc.

I was reading up on Oodinium online and people were saying that you should add salf to the water and heat it up to like.. 70.

My "tank" for him is pretty primitive - it is a large bowl with pebbles and shells - is it important to add salt in order to kill the bacteria in the water, and should I look into getting a heater for him so to prevent him from getting sick?

Any advice would be great - thanks! =)

Hi everyone, i have a tank of guppies that i purchased 3 weeks ago. I only had 6 fish to start in a large 96 litre tank. I was adviced that the filter needs to mature, which I beleive it has done as the water used to be a little cloudy and now it is crystal clear (without any intervention at all). I started with 6 fish but i am now down to 3 as the others died over 3 weeks. I am not overfeeding and am treating the tank with both an antibacterial medicine and an antifungal one (as adviced from shop). I was wondering whether it would be possible to buy some more fish this weekend despite the recent deaths... The other 3 seem absolutely fine and they are eating well and are very active.

To be honest, i want to buy more as only 3 fish in a 96 litre tank does look a little silly. What does everyone think?

I recently brought may be a 5 gallon fish bowl with 2 goldfish. My gold fish kept dying one after. Then I cleaned the tank and brought two more but they died too. Since I use tap water, my Aquarium guy suggested I use rock salt, which I did. I also use a small water pump. My 1st fish died of less oxygen, other 2 had some white fungus on them and they died. Another one just died. I have one more now, but it seems to be dying too. This one has some white stuff on its body. I even used anti fungal treatment. I also do a 25% water change every week or less. Every time I put new fish I made sure I cleaned the tank well with water only. I am scared to buy new fish since they are dying. Please do help me. What could I be doing wrong? I don't put more than 2 fish in my tank and now i have only one.

My fish have tail or fin rot or ick i'm not sure but i have increased the tempature to 79 the next one that's higher is 82 degrees and i dont know if i will kill my fish if i put the temp that high. I have but 3 tsp in my 37 gallon tank of kosher coarce salt in the water.(i have 57 guppies babies and 3 bala sharks)I just need to know if i only put the salt in once and how often do i change my water in the time period that it takes to get ride of the disease.I ahev tryed fungus tablets from petcetera and they turned my white guppies black.I took the fish into petcetera and they said to take 50 percent of the water out and and 3 days another 20 percent out in 3 days so i did and they went back to normal so i am now trying the salt i hope you can help thanks for reading my essay ...Tara Hastings

I've had a Betta fish for a week. He just started building a bubble nest. I don't know much about this, I don't own a female but is it usual for males to build one anyways? What should I do when I clean it and the nest breaks? Is that bad or will he just build a new one?

It's loud, and my tank is also climbing in temperature for no reason, so i'm thinking it's from the filter (i turned off the lights and the small heater and it's night time here)

I got her about 6 months ago at walmart (which I know says NOTHING about her age) and put her in a 5 gallon tank with 5 other small fish. She was about 1.5" long at the time I bought her.

I had a male betta in the tank but he died, and all except for one of the other fish died also. I currently have this female betta with a barb (not sure what it is). The female has grown to approx. 3.5" and has really elongated her fins, almost as flowy as a male betta. She is really fat and eats like crazy. She has a small (1/16") white thing that constantly hangs out of her anus(not sure about this location either). She looks bloated but she's not, there are no diseases in the tank because it's been treated for a long time.

She has cataracts... I think. Her eyes are covered with a cataract-like film that keeps intensifying. It seems as though she can still see fairly well.

What the heck is wrong with her? Is she just old, or is she fat and lazy with diseases?

The biowheel is from the freshwater and has been running for about 6 months. I never changed it per the manufacturers directions. I am using a new carbon filter but I was just wondering if the freshwater biowheel would cause any harm?

I was reading some things and I told myself "I'll get StressCoat!" But something caught my eye about Aloe Vera. It was about how it might cause your fish's gills to go bad or something. Then I read something about Amquel Plus and it was a negative thing aswell. Right now I use AquaSafe and I'm not sure if I should trust it. If you have any ideas or comments please... comment or propose your ideas here.

I just bought a Betta fish last night. He is in a 2.5 gallon tank (alone) with gravel, several plants, and water that has been left out for several days (apparently this is what you're supposed to do to "age" water when working with a new aquarium). He usually acts fairly calm and enjoys hiding under one of the bigger plants. However, sometimes he will dart out and start swimming around the tank as fast as he can, thrashing around instead of gliding like I've always seen bettas do, and turning left to right over and over. Also, he goes up to the top of the water and stares at the pellets I drop in, acts like he is going to eat them, then changes his mind and swims away. Is something wrong!? Thanks.

I know there's nothing different unless I want to get elaborate with filters and skimmers, but does anyone have suggestions on how to clean it out? I'm planning on using a sandy bottom with live rock. I know it's small, but it's just going to be for my poor cleaner shrimp.

Hi!
I am currently on the move to get more fish and I have 1 week to decide what fish to get. I am currently on a look out for some surface fish.

Do you guys have any ideas of some good surface fish?

Here is what I have:
3 Bronze Cories
3 Neons
3 Cherry Barb

Most of my fish I have are middle or bottom dwellers so I don't see much of them except on feeding. Do you have any good ideas of some surface fish that would go well in my aquarium and with my fish?

I can only have 2 fish at a time. Schooling fish would need to wait.

ok have had the sam air pump for 6 years and it finaly broke and mijer was having an air pump sale so I bought the mijer 60 gal double output lung-500 for my 20 gal i figured since it's a 60 gal pump it sould be a lot stronger than my 5 gal one. but I don't see a huge difference. I only hav it going on one of the out lets but I'm going to conect the two with a t vale for more air. so my questions are
1. will I see a big difference when I connect the two?
2. is there any thing wrong with this air pump?
3. is there a real differance bettween an air pump if it's for 10 or 80gal?

It seems to be feeding ok, Ive just ordered some daphnia as I was told that could help

I have a small pond that had one Koi fish in it. He was approx a year old and in good health. The pond is around 100 gallon plastic in ground unit with a small upper level that has plants in it but isnt accessible to the fish. A couple weeks ago I found the hose that pumps water to the upper level had come off and pumped most of the water out only leaving a couple inches for the fish to swim in. I fixed the hose, refilled the pond and fed him. He was swimming around and eating the food like normal. A couple hours later he was doing fine then the next morning I found him out on the grass, dead. A week later I went and got 7 more small ones and put them in the pond but within a couple days 2 more jumped out and died. I just added a bunch of small goldfish today and all the fish seem to be doing fine, I just want to make sure that I'm not missing anything here. I'm taking care of the pond like the owner of the house showed me to so I'm at a loss..... I dont want to loose anymore fish!

Our family just purchased a 38 gallon fish tank 14day ago.
We purchased the tank at a local pet store in a small town we live in. We had a tank established already but it was small (2 gallon). The pet store owner told us we could jump starts the new tank with the old one. Addition to that information he also told us we could put up to 25 fish in our new tank as soon a possible and sold us 25 fish in the 3days. Our big mistake we should have did our research before buying the fish (too many fish too fast). We lost 10 fish every few days since then.
The pet store owner replaced the First 3 fish no problem but the fourth and fifth fish, I took in a water sample for some help. He at that point refused to replace anymore fish told me I had new tank syndrome.
I Asked what I could do to help the fish survive he sold me a bacteria additive (very expensive) to add to the tank and that point told me he would not replace anymore fish. Put in the additive on the 4th day and I have no seen any change in the tank and I am still losing fish.
I need help please!!! Still losing 1 to 3 fish daily, my children and I are getting very upset not knowing what to really do. We never had a big tank before and just a Beta Fish.
3 molly, 2 bala sharks, 1 tiger barb, 2 danio, 1 red tail shark, 1 gourami, 1 cat fish, and 1 acanthicus Adonis
The Water Temp. range is 78-76 degrees,
Nitrate level is 20 ppm,
Nitrite level is 30 ppms
Hardness is 150 ppm
No chlorine
Total alkalinity is 180
pH is 7.8

I have a protien skimmer and a hang on the side filter for my saltwater tank and I have had a few things get sucked into them, including fish and anenomes. I am looking for a permanent solution to prevent this from happening. Right now I have a sponge covering the intakes of those items and they get dirty very quickly and are not permanent, does anybody have a suggestion?

i feel bad for him/her...it...
it just swims around in the same little bowl all day long. it doesnt even have stones or a castle because my mum doesnt like the bother of cleaning them when she cleans the bowl. i guess the answer here is simple, i should clean the bowl myself. and buy something to make my fish's life more exciting.
but don't they only have a 3 second memory?
should i buy it something to put in the bowl?
do goldfish get bored?

and does anyone know how to tell if it's a boy or girl?
