I have a protien skimmer and a hang on the side filter for my saltwater tank and I have had a few things get sucked into them, including fish and anenomes. I am looking for a permanent solution to prevent this from happening. Right now I have a sponge covering the intakes of those items and they get dirty very quickly and are not permanent, does anybody have a suggestion?

I know what you mean about sponges, but they work. It may not be such an attractive solution, but you can also use a small piece of hose (as in women's pantyhose) or netting (old aquarium net, or you can buy similar material in craft/fabric stores).

I had the same problem, so I got 5 sponges and changed them every day, then cleaned the dirty ones. This worked great, but if you just really don't want to do this, you should put a piece of pantie hose over the intake part. This works very well, but the sponges work better because with the pantie hose, the fish may still get their guts sucked out from getting too close. If you can find one, you can get a biowheel filter replacement and cut it into two pieces to put over the intake part

Copperhead's suggestion of using womens' pantyhose works well. We have used it on filters often. We always use it over the filters when there are eggs or very small fry in any of the tanks to keep them from getting sucked up. Any material made of a very fine mesh will work as it still allows the water to flow freely while keeping small critters protected.
