Since you don't have animals, the film could be from your water conditioner of organic matter/bacteria from live rock or live sand.

A protein skimmer could help remove this, but before you go to that expense I'd try just a surface skimmer first: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10591/product.web These can be used with any type of filter (using the various adapters) and work by drawing the water to be filtered from the top of the tank (some is also drawn from the bottom of the upright tube, and the proportion of top to bottom intake can be adjusted). The top piece (clear) floats and self-adjusts to changes in the water level so you don't have to worry about the filter running dry if the water level drops from evaporation.

I had that exact same concern with a dinky 2 gallon tank that i began out, observed it after 2 days. I had guppies in it (they survived the cycle) and the action picture is now not obvious. I in no way incredibly observed while it went away, and my fish are nice and happy now. i'm thinking do not subject approximately it, yet while it does not pass away in a pair weeks, perhaps subject approximately it. it is a few thing else when you consider that your tank is saltwater, even though it must be an identical element. i'm thinking somewhat it must be the seals on the sting of the aquarium, some thing comin off them perhaps. wish this helped

You do not have enough curent at the surface of the water.
I would add a Powerhead injside your tank and adjust it so it is pushing water across the surface of the water.
This should get rid of the film and also helps in the gas exchange, more oxygen in the water.

It's just residue from the substrate... . This is just the dust from the substrate in the bag, even if you rinsed it well, this happens. Just wait a day or so and it will settle or be filtered out. You're doing everything right.

You need more surface aeration.A power head aimed at the surface will keep the water surface moving so that you filter can clean it away.
