I have a 47 gal column tank that I could not get right. Was setting it up for African Ciclids. Could never get the ammonia under control. Bought a very small air pump so I could put fish in a bucket in case I had to do a masive water change, tank cleaning. Didn't have time right away so I just put the stone aireator into the tank to the bottom. Within a week the water was clear and ammonia almost zero. Now I have it on a small cheap timer. Runs about 14 hours a day, off at night. I am thinking that it increased circulation at bottom of tank and increased oxygen helping bio-filter get established. Dual bio-wheel filter system. No more problems. Any body else with simular experience?

Should I wait until they are born in the main tank then scoop them out into the breeding net, OR risk premature labour (if im wrong about the imminent birth) and put her into the breeding net now? Which is best?

My fish has had a bloated stomach for two weeks, at first I thought it was just constipation and fed it pea. But then it pooped. Now today his scales has just started pineconing. I was thinking about giving it an epson salt bath and using a combination of maracyn 1 and 2. I have a 1 gallon tank, what is the proper dosage of the two maracyn meds?

Well, he's a Crowntail Betta (I know he's a male for a fact), and he's almost seven years old. He's been kept with my Comet goldfish for a while now and just hangs out inside this ornamental stump-thing. Then, when feeding time rolls around he shimmies on out and eats. It's pretty crazy, how two fish such different sizes get along. Anyway, do you think that's pretty old? I have a Black Moore that's older than my dog (nine years).

I hope someone can help me here! My betta is acting very sick at the moment. Here are his symptoms:

1. Opaque, gray color to his face (loss of coloration)
2. Lethargic... doesn't swim much
3. Loss of appetite

He does NOT have sores, clamped fins, no other skin symptoms other than the gray on his face (which doesn't look like a film of anything).

Tank info:

3/4 gallon bowl
76 degree water (moved him to a warmer room)
Ammonia: .25 ppm
nitrate: 0 ppm
nitrite: 0 ppm
pH: 6.4

I have freshwater aquarium salt on hand... can someone clarify on whether I just dissolve the appropriate amount into some water and put it in the bowl? Do I just put it in and leave it there?

I just added 4 new fish to my aquriuam. One of the fish has soom of the symptoms of Ich but I am not 100% sure. He has some white spots located only on his fins. And ever since I got the fish on Sunday, He has been swimming right along the top of the water. The other 3 fish have it seems like fin rot going on but I am not sure if that is from the fish in which might have Ich. It seems as if their tip of their fins are white and seem to be decaying where it is white. I put these fish in another bowl with some hotter water with some aquarium salt. I do not know what to do, becuase I am manually moving the water. I do not know what the fish have and what to do over night. Please help fast!?!

im re-doing my aquarium, im planning on giving my current fish to my neighbor who has a really big tank. I have 29 gallons, a heater, a filter and a hood light to work with. I was wondering if i could put 2 or 3 or maybe even four freshwater angelfish in my tank. I want to have gravel and fack plants and decorations(i tried live plants and it is too much work now that im in high school) I was also wondering what other little fish or invertabrates and lil critters i could add.(i wouldnt put any other animals if i had 3 or 4 angelfish) im going for a symplistic modern-ish look. and i want the angels to be teh focus and the others to be like extras.

would any of these work...
snail(1)
cory cats(2-3)
hatchet(3-4)(tell me more about hatchets if u could)

We took her to the petstore, and they think she's bloated, or she's pregnant. We're feeding her a small flake a day, now, she seems so hungry when we feed it to her...

If she's pregnant, and we DON'T have a male for her...what will happen to her? Will she just keep growing in size? I know males squeeze the eggs out of the females...what's gonna happen to my beta?!

Please help!

Okay I have spawned my two bettas in a ten gallon tank. It's day five. I can see the fry and I am feeding them Atison's Betta fry Starter, and some of wardleys liqiufry for egglayers and live bearers. ((It helps infursia in the tank)). I see them sinking to the bottom though, the fry aren't moving much and have to keep swimming up as they sink back towards the bottom of the tank. Is there something wrong i'm doing with feeding them? How much should i feed at what time a day? Please help, this is my first time...

I just put in 2 tiger barbs into my aquarium on Sunday. The first day the tiger barbs seemed happy as can be. Now the tiger barbs have seperated and have started to grow some kind of weird white stuff on their back fin. It looks as if the end of the back fin is kind of decaying. (It looks as if it is losing its normal shape, but I have not seem any kind of fighting between the fish so I do not think that, that is the problem) The tank is 46 gallons and has all of the proper chemicals added. The tank is heated to around 87-88 degrees and has an external filter system on it. The tank consist of 2 bala sharks, 2 silver dollars, 2 tiger barbs, and 2 fire platys. Oh yeah, one of the fire planties is having the same problem. Can you please help me!?!

I have a couple of aquariums (one brackish and one fresh) and I'd like to find a freshwater fish that would be able to eat the snails that have mulitplied in my tank. I know about the "Had-a-snail" products but I'm looking to add another fish type into my aquarium anyway and I'd rather not kill the snails if there is a fish that would happily eat them.

If anyone knows about these old things they don't have the lip on which to put the hood, their hoods just rested on top of the rim. The problem is, I don't have the old hood, I can only buy new ones (that I know of.) I am ordereing all my stuff off of one site so I am not going to look on Ebay. Is there something I could do to make this work?

As a plausible research project I want to look into, I was wondering, what chemistry-or-bio-related projects could I do regarding fishtanks and the chemical cycle that takes place there? I know the cycle; but I was thinking of optional ways to 'clean up' fishtanks. I know that Nitrate is soluble in everything, so that's why it's a hard component to take out of fishtanks. However, Ammonia and Nitrite shoud be possible to remove from fishtanks...
I always wanted to know, why not come up with a way to remove Ammonia from fishtanks, and thus never have to bother with the weekly partial water changes? Or with Nitrite?
What are some possible solutions? Some ideas to look into? What do people do already to address this issue? Why is it not enough/why are we still (mostly) stuck with using partial water changes?
