any beta can be smart, just make sure its happy and health. if you want to train it, keep the fish in an active place, when betas are in areas where there is nothing going on they become skittish. make sure you fish isn't afraid of shadows and is used to you being very close if not touching his tank. once you establish that bond you can teach it to follow your finger. there is also a kit out there some where that can help train your fish to swim through a hoop :) i have done this with my beta and its alot of fun.

There is no variety of betta that is smarter but to find a smart betta look at it. The more alert bettas always are swimming and are aware of you. Keep your betta in a tank not a bowl so it has lots of space. For a smart mind you have to have amusement so pay attention to your fish and provide high quality food plants and ornaments. A heater perks bettas up too!
Hope I could help!
Curious George your not the only one to make this mistake but put two and two togther this is in the fish section ther is a fish called a betta. Before you correct someone in a mean way make sure you have a clue what your talking about.

Define "smart" in terms of fish. When you're at the store, look for the Bettas that are the most active and show the brightest coloration. They will be healthier, and will learn more readily once you get them home. No particular fin type of Betta is any smarter than another seeing as they are all the same species (Betta splenden) that are just bred to display different finnage. Email me if you have any questions.

Curious George, don't be an idiot. Learn English. Learn to read. If you are gonna tell somebody they are wrong, you had better be right.

I am happy to say that almost all bettas are very intelligent. I have had some amazing experience with bettas.
But just some advice, a healthy betta is a smart betta, so when you are choosing your fish, make sure there colour is very rich and evenly spread out around the body.

there is nothing as a smart betta, they are all smart but their is none that is smarter than another.
Basically bettas and fish in general dont do tricks and thats for the best. enjoy their natural beauty or find another choice for a pet.
dont take this the wrong way, but i find trying to train fish the same as fighting fish... cruel. but that is my opnion.

I have 3 beta's right now. Do not put any of them in the same tank because they will fight and kill each other! A beta has it's own personality but all 3 of mine are smart!
